Harry Tresise, Chairman of the Durham Organization for Industrial Training announces announces that eleven . new companies have joined DOIT. ; They include three Ajax firms Dowty Equipment (Canada), (Canada), Fabricated Welding and Dominion Colour. Co.; three Pickering industries - Cooper Metalcraft, D & E Precision Tooling Ltd. and Diro Metal Manufacturing; three Whitby companies - Crovjn Manufacturing, Dupont Dupont of Canada and J.H. McNairn Ltd. ; Flamingo Division Division of Vachon Inc. of Port Perry and Westcane Sugar of. Oshawa. This raises the membership of DOIT's Employer Employer Sponsored training committee to 42. Tresise reports that considerable considerable progress is being made by DOIT, and outlined new projects of the industrial training committees. Plans are underway to provide trajning to upgrade electriçal trades personnel in the Dur- harp Region. A number of companies have expressed interest in such a project. DOIT's objectives are to analyze what training has been done to date, assess future needs, and determine what is required to handle the on-going technological change, in this particular skilled trades field. An ad hog committee composed of Stewart Stewart Wagner of the General JOB PRINTING Orono Weekly Times ' Motors Fabricating plant, Reinhard Mantzel of the Canada Employment Centre and J.J. White of Westcane Sugar Ltd. will work with representatives of the interested interested companies in the development development of such a training program. E.A. Barks, President of Cooper Metalcraft, representing representing the precision metal fabricators fabricators in the Durham Region, Region, has solicited the DOIT committee's assistance in having the precision metal fabricating trade recognized as a "certified" skilled trade. The reason for this request for help is a result of many years in an industry which has continually experienced growth rates without a proper training facility to develop existing or potential employees. employees. It was felt that develqpment of an Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Training Program that; can be recognized pro- vincially and nationally would encourage young people to commence long term training in the secure knowledge, that the industry could support their career expectations. The metal fabricators fabricators believe that a "feeder system" of new employees ready to be trained trained and willing to commence ..work in their industry, would provide the solution to a chronic need for new personnel. personnel. After some discussion at a recent meeting, the DOIT committee agreed to support the efforts of the metal fabricating companies through the establishment of a sub-committee which would deal specifically with the development, lobbying and organizational efforts required. required. A status report on current training in the Durham Region Region .was made by Frank Norris from the Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Training Board of the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. Total training in the Industrial Mechanic, Fitter Fitter Welde,r, General Machinist Machinist and Tool and Die programs programs are now 155, up from 74, one year ago. The 155 trainees do not include 60 mouldmakers currently on block release programs. A survey in regard to Motor Vehicle Mechanics in the . Durham Region is being planned which will establish training needs in this area. There are currently a large number of apprentice motor mechanics who would prefer to take their training here. Therefore, there could be a strong advantage in developing developing a local program. The next meeting of the DOIT committee it scheduled for December 18 and will be, held at the Durham Regional Headquarters at 10 a.m. Any companies interested in participating participating are most welcome.
