4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 10th, 1980 Stuff's Bantams Ororio 4, Ops 2 Saturday evening Ops Township travelled to Orono. It was the third time these teams had met this year, with Orono coming away with a win. The first period was scoreless and it wasn't until 0:32 in the Second period that Mike Hamel and Steve Sawyer scored on a nice play in front of the net. Eight seconds later Orono roared back down the ice. Guy Bràchvogel standing in perfect position at the corner of the net blasted it past Ops goalie Brian Brasier. GregVey and Fred Cashin did some ^reat work in getting the puck loose and picked up the assists on the goal. In the third period the teams traded goals. Mike Hamel scored his second of the game, Greg Vey and Fred Cashin picking up the assists. Orono's fourth goal went to Fred Cashin, standing at the corner of the net on a great pass from Mike Hamel and some hard work from Greg Vey. It was a great team effort, everyone was really digging and showed lots of hustle. Geoff Green and Rick Martin enjoyed another good game in nets for Orono making many good saves. Tennant Fuel Atoms Orono 4, Oshawa Redwings 2 On Monday, December 1st, 1980 the Tennant Fuel O.M.H.A. Atoms hosted the Little N.H.L. Red Wings from Oshawa in an exhibition game and came away with a 4-2 win. Orono opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Brent Hutton assisted by Laurens Kaldeway. With 0:28 seconds left in the period Brent Hutton came up with his second, an unassisted effort to put the local boys ahead 2-0. In the second period Brian Hill set up David Bailey who put it in to put the Orono team ahead 3-0. Oshawa then came right back to cut the margin to 3-1 on a goal by Robert Pearson, only to see Orono come back less than a minute later to make the score 4-1 on a goal by Todd Thertell, with assists going to Brent Hutton and Laurens Kaldeway. The third period saw both teams having many goal chances but both goal keepers coming up with excellent saves time and again. With 5:35 left in the game Robert Pearson came up with his second, an unassisted effort to end the game Orono 4, Oshawa Red Wings 2. Special mention td Doug Bedford, Mark Vanderheyden and Todd Thertell. Orono 3, Millbrook 4 On Saturday afternoon, December 6th the Tennant Fuel O.M.H.A. Atoms travelled to Millbrook for a league game and came out on the short end of a 4-3 score. „ * Millbrook opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Gordy Bonner who incidently scored all four of Millbrook's gbals. * In the second period Millbrook upped the score to 2-0 with Gordy's second of the game. Orono finally got their act together and came up with three of their own to put the local boys up 3-2. Scoring for Orono were Brian Goodwin unassisted, Brent Hutton assisted by Ted Gaudet, and Brian Hill assisted by Patrick Woods. From the face off after Orono's third goal Gordy Bonner went straight down and scored his third to tit! the game 3-3. • In. the third period Gordy scored his fourth to put Millbrook ahead to stay 4-3, although the local boys put on the pressure they could not come up with the equalizer. This was one of the boys poorer games and they have to remember to play as a team and play three periods of hockey to win. Special mention to Ted Gaudet, and Brian Hill. Orono 3, Oshawa Blackhawks l On Saturday evening, December 6th, the O.M.H.A. Tennant Fuel Atoms played host to the Oshawa Blackhawks of the Little N.H.L. This turned into a fine hockey game with both teams very evenly matched. The first and second periods saw both teams with numerous chances only to be stopped by some excellent goaltending at both ends. Finally with 0:22 seconds left in the second period Laurens Kaldeway tipped in Brent Hutton's rebound to put Orono ahead 1-0. In the third period Oshawa came back to tie the game 1-1 on a goal by Steve Blais. With 1:12 left in the game Kevin Mumford put in the winning goal on a perfect pass from David Bailey, with 0:26 left in the game David Bailey put in the insurance goal with assists going to Brent Hutton and Kevin Mumford to end the game Orono 3 apd Oshawa Blackhawks 1. Special mention to Kevin Mumford, David Bailey and Patrick Woods. Next home game, Saturday, December 13th, 7:00 p.ip., Orono vs. Bowmanville. 1.0,0. F. No. 1 Pee Wees On Friday evening Orono hosted Port Hope tieing them 3-3. Mark Sargent opened the scoring assisted by Robert Snoek. Port Hope came back to score two goals in the first period. Port Hope scored again in the second period. Mark Sargent scored unassisted, making it 3-2 Port Hope. The third period saw some good end to end plays With lefts of scoring opportunities. Robert Snoek, assisted by Mark Sargent and Kevin Hartwig, tied the game 3-3. Special mention to Jason Carleton in net, Mike Lane and Brian Souch. Keep digging guys, you can do it. Rough ley Insurance Novice The United Counties Novice, Orono team, lost their first game after 8 straight wins! Orono Roughley Insurance hosted the Port Hope Dawson Coleman team December 5th and got defeated 2-1/Blaine Souch got the only goal for Orono tieing the game one apiece at the 13:13 mark of the third period. However with 4:43 minutes in the game Port Hope 2 scored one more to take the game. Orono boys were outshot 13 to 6. Orono wins C.Ç.M.H.L. Novice Tournament "A" Championship in- Col- borne, Ont. On December 6th, 1980, Orono travelled to Colborne arqua for their «first tournament of the season 80-81. First game started at 11 a.m. against Warkworth. It seemed like an easy victory for the boys of Orono whp walked away with a 14-0 win. In the second game, Orono had to face Baltimore. This game was a good test and was a lot harder win for Orono. It was Anthony Webb who came through in the third period to score the first goal assisted by Todd Gray, and also the reassurance goal assisted by Kevin Avery to make the final score 2-0 for Orono. Orono then advanced and prepared themselves for the final game of the day against Grafton 2. The Orono boys seemed to have two sets of legs in the tournament, with an impressive performance that outclassed Grafton 2 in «every* department and beat them 13-1. It took the C.C.M.H.L, Tournament Medalion home! Special mentiori to Mike Goodmurphy, Orono goalie 1 who allowed only one goal to slip by him after a total of 38 stops in three games. In the C.C.M.H L. Matthews-Hill O.M.H.A. Pee Wees Sunday, December 7, Orono travelled travelled to Ops for an afternoon game. The final score was a 2-2 tie, with Ops tieing the game with only 23 seconds remaining. Goal scorers for Orono were Jim Wood from Scott Irwin anid John Cowan, then Paul Henry scored an unassisted goal. Monday, December 8 saw Ops come to Orono for a return game. This time Orono câme out on top by a score of 3-2. Scoring for Orono were Scott Irwin with assists to Jim Wood and Eric Dreslinski, then Paul Henry scored two in a row with an assist from Scott McCullough. Special mention to Chris Langford for his outstanding goal-tending. United Counties Bantams The Orono Kinsmen Bantams got back to some resemblance of a winning * hockey team by tieing Baltimore No. 2 on Friday night by the score of 7-7. The weekend previous they played 3 exhibition hockey games and were skunked in all three, but when it counts, in league play they pulled to-gether and played a very exciting end offensive type of game. The marksmen for the game were David Dawes with four goals and one assist, Raymond Ripley one goal and three assists, Steven Murree 2 assists, Mark Henry one goal, Steven Merrick one goal and Robert French one assist. Again the team had excellent goaltending their ace Greg Stacy, The next home game is Friday. December 12 at 9:00 p.m. Come on nut and cheer on our local boys.
