The correct details of the proposed semester plan for Clarke High School. On Thursday, December 11th Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dawson presented the proposed proposed plan to the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education. After a debate, of which Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dawson cited the benefits and disadvantages of the full-credit semester system, system, the Board' gave their approval to continue their study of the system. But, at the same time they also referred the matter to the new curriculum committee for full discussion because of , some unanswered questions. , One of the benefits of this system is that there would be better use of text books and equipment. Many students at Clarke are without texts because there are just not enough for everyone. With a full credit semester system students would have texts. Another advantage is that there would be more drop-ins instead of drop-outs. Students could graduate early if they only needed four credits or less for their diploma. Also, teachers would get to know their students better in the 75 minute classes and be able to give individual help and attention when required. Classes are now 40 minutes in length. Some of the drawbacks of this- system are that examinations examinations would have to be extended. There would be increased counselling and guidance loads because of students transferring in and out of the system, as well as " increased administrative . loads.' Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dawson received 91 percent support from the staff at Clarke High School. They received - 60 percent support from the students. 23 percent of the students reported that if a teacher could keep them interested for 75 minutes they were all for it. The full-credit semester system Mr. Taylor and Mr. Dawson are proposing, will split the school year into two equal, parts. The students will pick their usual eight subjects at the beginning of the year, but will only take four subjects, through to January. During the latter part of January the changeover will occur and students will then take their other four subjects. A system such as this would be invaluable to courses such as home economics and industrial arts. It would give Students much more time to complete projects. * Nevertheless the full-credit semester system is a likely possibility for the 1981-82 school year. In, speaking with Mr. W.H. Carman, trustee, he said both Bowmanvillë and Courtice are considering the semester system but as yet no proposal from these two schools have been "brought before the Board. He also said in other school systems where the semester system is in operation operation it has increased school enrolments by making it easier for students to get the subjects they desire and for others to drop back ■ into school. Hockey the most dangerous sport 983-5301 Hockey is the most dangerous dangerous sport. Documentation of the thousands of injuries to children which are treated in hospitals reveals that hockey has higher injury frequency and severity rates than any other sport. If you are buying protective gear for a young player be very selective in your choice of head protection. The head is the most important part of the body and very vulnerable. Look for the Canadian Standards Standards Association (CSA) mark on hockey helmets and face protectors. The CSA Standard requires manufacturers to stipulate that the face protector has . been certified for use with the appropriate helmet. Make sure that the face protector is suited to the helmet. Do not drill holes in a helmet in order to attach a face protector. Do not put paint or gummed decals On a helmet. The chemicals could cause cracks. . If the helmet or face protector cracks as à result of a blow discard immediately. It has served its purpose. Even if they have not been subjected to an obviously severe blow they should be inspected before each wearing wearing arid if a crack is detected the item should not be worn. CSA certified face protectors protectors .marked Z 262 are suitable for forward and defense positions and those marked Z 262.2 - M78 are designed for all hockey positions positions including goal tending.
