4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 7th, 1981 ( SPORTS Stutt's Bantams 'Orono 8 - Newcastle 1 ^ December 11 Orono travelled to Newcastle on Thursday evening for a late game. In their last meeting they played to a 2 - 2 tie with Newcastle goalie Scott Hooper stopping Orono on many occasions. The local boys finally found the openings and pumped in eight goals.before the game ended. Newcastles only goal came from Orono's Steve Sawyer as it slipped off his stick when he was going around his own net catching goalie Rick Martin by surprise. Billy Slack was credited with the score. Goalies Geoff Green and Rick Martin turned away Newcastles drives and played solid hockey. The local boys are playing good solid hockey and have not lost a game this year. Orono's goal scorers, Mike Hamel 3, Greg Vey 1, Glyn Jenkins 2, Paul Morton 1, Fred Cashin 1. Orono 4 - Omemee 1 December 16, 1980 -Orono travelled to Omemee on Tuesday evening and came away with a big win. Everyone played well and it was a great team effort. December 20,1980 - Orono 7 - Millbrook 3 Saturday evening Millbrook travelled to Orono for their third meeting of the season. Orono played with only eight skaters and came up with a big win Mike Hamel and Randy Tennant are out with injuries, Fred Cashin was ill. Glyn Jenkins had another great game scoring 4 goals and assisting on 2. Other goal scorers were Greg Vey 1, Steve Sawyer 1 and Guy Brachvogel. December 22,1980 - Orono 3 - Millbrook 3 Orono travelled to Millbrook' for the second of back to back games .and were lucky to come away with a tie. Again Orono were short players because of injuries and we hope the boys recover soon. Orono played a very lack luster game showing very little hustle and effort. ' Two days after Christmas Stutts Bantams, full of turkey and Christmas Pudding, travelled to Fenelon Falls for a tournament and came away with the Consolation Championship after three big wins. Because o,f a point system used to keep track of the games. The local boys won their second game and found out they were only in the "B" series championship game. Bobcaygeon, who had lost to Orono earlier went on to the "A" sériés because of a better goal scoring average which cancelled out Orono's two wins. But this strange system did not get the local boys down, as they got down to business playing their third game 15 min. after their second and going on to a big win. Game 1 - Orono 3 - Tweed 2 * Orono got off to a slow start letting Tweed score two easy goals before Glyn Jenkins scored getting the local boys started. Guy Brachvogel scored two goals twenty-nine seconds apart giving Orono the win. Assists going to Glyn Jenkins 2, Mike Hamel 1, Steve Sawyer 2. 'GAME 2 - Orono 4 - Bobcaygeon 2 Orono again got off to a slow start with Bobcaygeon scoring first, this was a hard hitting game with lots of end to end action. Steve Sawyer got the team rolling with a fine unassisted goal when he out muscled the Bobcaygeon goalie and he dropped the puck in the net. Mike Hamel who was playing with a pulled groin injury scored unassisted stickhandling the goalie right out of the net. Grey Vey scored Orono's third goal on a nice play in front of the net, assist going to Mike Hamel. Guy Brachvogel scored his third of the tournament and Orono's fourth of the game putting it on ice for Orono. Game "3 - Orono 8 - Tweed 2 Fifteen minutes after their game with Bobcaygeon Orono skated back on the ice to play Tweed in'the "B" championship. ' Orono again let Tweed score first before they got on track. Glyn Jenkins had a big game scoring 5 goals for the local squad. Goal scorers: Glyn Jenkins 5, Mike Hamel 1, Steve Sawyer 1, Greg Vey 1. Assists: Derek Mumford 2, Greg Vey 1, Ken Bailey 1, Mike Hamel 1. Everyone played very well for Orono and winning the "B" championship was a great team effort. Stutts Bantams- would like to wish everyone a Very Happy New Year for 1981. Orono Tykes On Friday, Jan. 2nd the Tykes had an exhibition game with Millbrook Tykes in the Orono Arena. The first period saw no scoring by either club as they skated end to end. Orono got the first goal of the game off the stick of Kent Vanderheyden, passed along by Jason Brachvogel and Jarret Prescott. Before the second period was over Millbrook had tied it up. Early in the third period Millbrook went ahead, but not for long. Jason Brachvogel broke in over the blue line, and skated quickly to the net, snapping in a goal. Assisting on the play was Kevip Roberts and Greg Hooper. Jason Major had his turn in goal for Orono and did a fine job. The game ended in a 2-2 tie. Shane Jones and Teddy Baker are improving more with every game played. Orono I .O.O. F . Hockey On Dec. 19th Orono I.O.O.F. No.' 1 hosted Baltimore 1 being defeated 7-1. Orono just couldn't get it together, and Baltimore dominated the whole game. Kevin Hartwig assisted by Mark Sargent scored the only goal. On Dec. 21st Orono hosted i St. Gertrüde Church League from Oshawa, defeating them 3-2. Todd Mercer assisted by Jason Carleton opened the scoring if or H Orono early in the first period. Oshawa came back to score. Mark Sargent scored unassisted. Second period saw soma good end to end plays with Tim Mercer assisted by Darren Dennis scoring the only goal of the period. Oshawa came back late in the game to make the final score 3-2. Special mention to Todd Mercer, Darren Dennis, Peter Armstrong and Jason Carleton, who got his first assist of the year (goalie). . In an exhibition game Orono 1 hosted Orono 2. Darren Lewis opened the scoring for Orono 2 early in the game unassisted. Brian Souch came back within one minute to score assisted by Kevin Hartwig and Peter Armstrong. Then Kevin Hartwig scored unassisted for Orono 2. Kevin Hartwig scored again, assisted by Todd Mercer to make the score 3-1 at the end of the first period. Second period remained scoreless with, close checking for both teams. Peter Armstrong assisted by Brian Souch and Todd Mercer ■ scored early in the third period. Orono travelled to Bewdley Novice Tournament, and won their first game against Cobourg. First period Blaine Souch assisted by Anthony Webb scored the first goal, then Todd Gray scored unassisted. The second period Anthony Webb scored twice, with assists going to Blaine Souch and Todd Gray. Cobourg scored two goals. Todd Gray scored assisted by Anthony Webb and Blaine Souch, making it 5-2 at the end of the second period. Anthony Webb scored unassisted. Orono then let up a little in the third and Cobourg scored three unanswered unanswered goals. Todd Gray scored assisted by Richard Stolk, making the final score 8-5. Orono then met Bewdley defeating them 5-0. Blaine Souch opened the scoring unassisted for Orono. Both teams had some good scoring opportunities and end to end plays. Second period remained scoreless. Third period Orono dominated it, goals going to Todd Gray, assisted by Blaine Souch, Jason Burnham assisted by Todd Gray, Brian Rodd assisted by Kevin Avery, Richard Stolk assisted by Anthony Webb. Special mention to Mike Good- murphy for great goal tending. This win put Orono in the A division. The championship game Orono came up against Baltimore Marshman. Todd Gray assisted by Anthony Webb openêd the scoring for Orono. Baltimore scored.tieing it up. Orono had some good scoping chances by couldn't get it by the goalie. Baltimore scored in the second. Finally in the third period Anthony Webb scored unassisted tieing the game 2-2. Both teams played very well. In the five minute overtime period no one scored which caused great exeitemént for the fans. Next shoot-out Baltimore scored twice, Orono scoring once. Orono was defeated 3-2. A great team effort and good sportsmanship. sportsmanship. On January 2nd, Orono Roughley nested Hoods' Supply from Port Hope in an exhibition game tied at 5-5. Port Hope dominated the'first period scoring two goals. Orono couldn't seem to put the puck in the net. Port Hope scored one in the second. Mike Goodmurphy scored unassisted. unassisted. Todd Gray shored two quick goals, assists going to Darren Mercer and Anthony Webb. Brian Rodd scored on a penalty shot. Todd Gray scored assisted by Darren Mercer and Blaine Souch. Port Hope came back to score two goals tieing the game. Special mention to excellent | defense, Todd Gray hat trick and Brian Rodd. January 2nd Orono No. 1 travelled to Bewdley for a tournament. Orono met Grafton in their first game, being defeated 5-2. Orono just couldn't get the puck in the net. Brian Souch assisted by Kevin Hartwig and Robert Snoek scored the first goal for Orono. Kevin Hartwig assisted by Robert Snoek scored the second. Grafton dominated most of the game. In game 2 Orono met Omemee in the' semi-finals, being defeated 3-2. These two teams were evenly matched. At one point in the game Orono was down 3-0. In the third period Orono came back to score two unanswered goals. Kevin Hartwig scored assisted by Brian Souch and Mike Lane and again Kevin Hartwig, assisted by Darren Dennis and Robbie Jerome. Orono dominated the third period but just couldn't put the puck in the net for the tie. - Special mention- to all the boys for their hard work ànd determined effort. Mark Sargent did an excellent job in net for the absent Jason Carleton. United Counties Pee Wees ORONO TEAM lyO. 2 On December 20th Orono No.. 2 travelled to Bewdley and lost by a score of 7-3. Orono goal scorers Chris Richards 1 goal assisted by Rodney Storsbergen, Darren Lewis 2 goals, assisted by John Cowan 2, and by Russell Sullivan 1. On December 21 Orono No. 2 travelled to Port Hope to play S & R Body Shop and lost by a score of 3-2. Orono goal scorers were Chris Richards 1 goal, , assisted by Russell Sullivan, Darren Lewis 1 goal, assisted by Rodney Storsbergen. On January 4th Orono No. 2 travelled to Port Hope to play Richard's Printing and lost by a score of 4-0. On January 2nd Orono No. 2 travelled to Bewdley to play in their first tournament. Orono No. 2 played Newcastle No. 1 the first game and lost by a score of 5-1. Orono's only goal was scored by Chris Richards assisted by Darren Lewis and Derek Henry. In their second game against Newcastle No, 2 Orono No. 2 lost by a score of 4-2. Orono's 2 goals were scored by John Cowan, with 1 assist going to Steven Barry. Roughley Insurance Novice In the last regular scheduled game _ of this year Orono defeated the Baltimore Marchmands 6-2 on December 19th, 1980. The opening period started " with Anthony Webb scoring the first goal at 14:39 mark, assist going to Gary Thajer. Second goal for Orono, Gary Thajer unassisted at the 12:55 mark. Gary Thajer scored at 4:52, with the assist going ,to Darrin Mercer, to end the first period. It was Orono again to open the scoring in the second period. It was Richard Stolk scoring after some beautiful passing plays, from Blaine Souch and Brian Rodd assisting at the 12:15 mark. Baltimore, finally with team efforts, scored at 5:51 to end the second period. In the final period scorers were Anthony Webb at 11:55 mark assisted by Kevin Avery, and Steven Vanderschec. Baltimore tried to come back and scored 'half way in that period? some hard skating from end to end was seen. And with 2:01 remaining in the game Gary 1 Thajer scored, unassisted to end the game. Orono outshot Baltimore 22-20. Outstanding players in «that game were: Mike Goodmurphy, Orono's goalie 1, with solid goal keeping efforts ? Gary Thajer, with a hat trick; Blaine Souch and Brian Rodd with good passing plays; Todd Gray with good play making. The coaches and all the Orono Novice tiockey Player^ are sending Happy New year 81 wishes to the sponsor Mr. Roughley, the Newcastle Independent and hockey parents, and to all their fans old and hew. Tennant Fuel Atoms TENNANT FUELS O.M.H.A. ATOMS PLACE SECOND IN NEWCASTLE TOURNAMENT Orono 1 - Oakwood 1 In the first gamè Orono came up against Oakwood and came up with a very sluggish effort. Although the game ended in a tie, Orono was-awarded the win after 5 minutes of sudden death overtime by total shots on goal. Scoring the goal for Orono was Brent Hutton with the assist going to (Continued, page 5)
