s-Orono Wéekly Times, Wednesday, January 7th, 1981 Public speaks on park hunting WOODS, WATER AND WILDLIFE by Ron Reid Federation of Ontario Naturalists THE PUBLIC SPEAKS ON PARK HUNTING Just over a year ago, this column touched on the issue of hunting within provincial parks, which at the time was occurring in parks across the province without the necessary necessary regulations. The Ministry of Natural Resources, which controls both parks policy ahd hunting, had promised to resolve this contentious issue by issuing a new policy, on wildlife management in Ontario Ontario parks. A year later, that policy has yet to appear. One of the reasons for the Ministry's procrastination became became clear this past month, with the release of an opinion poll conducted in .February 1980. This Gallup Poll, carried out for the Ministry at the suggestion of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists, confirms confirms the depth of opposition to sport hunting within parks. An incredible 86 percent of the 1100 adults interviewed were opposed or strongly opposed to the suggestion: only 8 percent were in favour or strongly in favour. That opposition to park hunting is not restricted to the big citites - the sample in northern Ontario rejected the activity almost as strongly, at 85 percent, as the residents of Metro Toronto. The Gallup Poll also explored explored public attitudes towards mining in parks, which is opposed by 73 percent. Fortunately, Fortunately, this industrial activity activity is not new allowed in any Ontario parks. Logging in parks, which now occurs in Algonquin and Lake Superior, is opposed by 66 percent with only 17 percent in favour. The survey results run counter to some commonly held beliefs. For example, the strongest opposition opposition to park logging comes from occupations described as loabour, and the strongest level of regional opposition comes not from the cities, but from the north. Obviously, the "townhouse environmentalists" environmentalists" are not the only group who want parks maintained as sanctuaries. The results of this survey ' should prove more than a little embarrassing to the Ministry' of Natural Resources, Resources, for it demonstrates clearly that the past policies have all too often, catered to vested interests and the personal bias of Ministry staff rather than the wishes of the public. Given the overwhelming overwhelming margin of public opinion, we have every right to expect that hunting in provincial parks will be ended immediately, immediately, and that lo'gging activities activities will be phased out as soon as possible.
