Saviour's Anglican Church has donated a sum of $300,00 to the Orono Boat People Fund which was in a deficit position of some $1100.00 after the years operation. Further donations are still being accepted by either Ray Dickson or Roy Forrester. -CALLED TO CHIMNEY FIRE The Orono department of the Newcastle Fire Department were called out Monday morning to the home of B. Lamothe on the fourth line of Clarke west of Highway 115. The fire, a chimney or fireplace fire, penetrated into a portion of the wall which had to be torn out. Damage was estimated between $2,000 and $3,000. The fire is considered to have started from a fault in the fireplace. COBOURG COUNCILLOR WANTS FIFTY PERCENT PAY INCREASE A Cobourg councillor has placed a motion before Cobourg council asking for a fifty percent remuneration increase. Don Kirkup Would have the mayor receive $12,000, reeve $9,000, deputy-reeve $8,000 and councillors $6,000. Kirkup was elected to council in November for the first time and states he is surprised at the amount of time and work involved. Potticary nominated liberal candidate existed over the past four years. He said he promised to work the hardest anyone has in the riding. He was critical of the Tories who on one hand gave rural hydro users a hydro bonus of , $3.00,while on the other hand Ontario Hydro upped their rate by a sum of $5.00 resulting resulting in a deficit of $2.00. Potticary was also critical of the loss of the planning exercise by the local municipalities municipalities within the Region, all the result of the Province of Ontario interference. He said the educational system was not satisfactory even though it had been set up by Premier Davis himself. Potticary said he wanted to bring his voice to Queen's Park which, he said, had not Obituary MRS. MONA E. DUVALL A resident of Leskard since 1934, ,Mrs. Mona E. Dtfvall died at the Bowmanville Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Wednesday, January 28th, 1981. Mona E. Duvall (nee Miller) was born January 15,1 1892, at Newpark, Manvers Township and attended Newpark Newpark Public School. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. 'Robert Miller! She worked at the Post Office in Grimsby and married Earl Duvall in 1919. From 1934 to 1963 Mona and Earl operated the General Store and Post Office in Leskard retiring in 1963. Mr. Duvall died in 1972. She was a member of the Orono United Church and a member of the Leskard LTC.W. unit. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Audrey Halfyard, Barrie, Barrie, and two sons, Herbert and Gerald of Orono, five grandchildren grandchildren and sii great grandchildren. grandchildren. She was predeceased predeceased by three brothers, Howard, Orme and William and a sister, Mrs. Flossie Pritchard. As the French proverb says, "Spring is always the neighbour to St. Valentine". The United Church elders met in Orono United Church on Valentine's Day. Their discussions were led by Rev. David Spivey and Rev. John Peters and others from Oshawa. Oshawa. Kendal Church was represented by Mrs. E. Foster, Foster, Mr. G. Cathcart, and Mr. A. Thompson. On Sunday morning the scripture chosen by Rev. A. Tizzard was St. John 15:1-11, In the 14th chapter, verse 6 Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life". Two weeks ago the sermon was entitled, "The way", last week it was, "the truth", and the subject today was "the life". What is life? St. John 10, verse 10. "I am come that* they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly." John 11, verse 25. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life". We celebrate Christmas and have special services at Easter. We should perhaps be more concerned with the inbetween period. The life of Jesus as he lived it. He was life. We are a frustrated generation, confused confused and frustrated about our spiritual life. This life is but the beginning of a richer, fuller life. Elliott on Wednesday afternoon with seven ladies present. Mrs. Eleanor Foster, president for the first quarter of the year chaired the meeting. Mrs. Foster opened Region faced with 17 p.c. tax increase The Region of Durham Finance Committee has set a guideline to keep Regional ' taxes within a 17 percent increase for 1981. The budget is expected to come down by April 1st. Early returns from departments in the Region indicated a 26 percent increase increase to meet intended expenditures expenditures for 1981. At this point the finance committee brought down their guideline of seventeen percent. If guidelines are met the Region will ask taxpayers for $24 million in 1981 compared to $20.6 million in 1980. It has been stated that the sizeable increase this year in taxation is due to cuts in expenditures in 1980. In 1980 the tax take by the Region of Durham increased increased only two percent from that of 1979. The finance committee has also recommended no new projects or programs for 1981 and have been, continually ' paring budgets as they come before the committee. The committee has given approval for $1.8 million in capital works for the sanitary sewage system through de- benturing but has cut out a proposed addition in Port Whitby which would have amounted to $2.65 million. This matter will be considered considered by council at the next meeting. The recipients of the Live Love Project were chosen for this year. It was moved by Miss C. ; Stewart, seconded by Mrs. Dora Youngman that the U.C.W.pay $51.00, the price of the-railing at the pulpit. Mrs. E. Foster moved a vote of thanks for Reg. Elliott for installing the same. Plans were made concerning concerning the World Day of Prayer March 6th at Kendal United Church. On Feb. 11th Mrs. June Mumford returned to her home at McCord, Sask.
