élebrates 90th birthday 3 j, Mrs. Mary Morris a lifelong lifelong resident of Orono celebrated celebrated her ninetieth birthday last Saturday when she greeted greeted an abundance of friends and relatives at a birthday party in her honour at the Orono Oddfellow's Hall. Mrs. Morris had endeared herself to the residents of the community over the years and especially during the period when she lived next to the Orono Public School and Continuation 1 School where. she came in contact with most youngsters treking off to- school. Her relationship with the community was also enhanced during the years her husband «operated the Orono Telephone system, and exchange. The respect in which Mrs. Morris is held in the community community was exemplified on - Saturday with the multitude who visited her at her celebration. Mote, chairman Business Centre The Board of the Orono Village Improvement Area last Tuesday elected their officers for the year 1981. The Board also made further plans for their March Frolic to be held on Saturday, Mârch 14th. Those elected to office on the board were: Alan Mote, chairman; Mrs. Terry Vreeker, vice-chairman; Paul Kelcey, treasurer; Roy-- Forrester, secretary. Carl White' was authorized at the meeting to make arrangements with local citizens citizens who may wish to take space at the March Frolic party in the Town Hall to display or sell local crafts.. Tentative plans have been made to provide Dixieland music at the Hall on March 14th along with other local talent that may come available available which could include a dance group from the Orono Public School. A general meeting of local * businessmen is to be held in Orono on February 24th when ' the March Frolic proposal is to be presented by the board. Eng., O.L.S., has been elected as one of two new Councillors to the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors for a three year term of office. The Association is a corporate corporate body which represents the interests of the approximately approximately 720 land surveyors in Ontario. Its objectives are to regulate the practice of professional land surveying and to govern the profession in accordance with the Surveyor's Surveyor's Act and the regulations regulations and by-laws therein. The professional body also functions to, establish and maintain standards and professional professional ethics among its members in order that the public interest may be served. and protected. Lynn, a Civil Engineering graduate of Queen's University, University, completed his articles articles for Ontario Land Surveying Surveying with his brother, M.D. Brown, P. Sylvester Limited in Port Hope as an associate and five years later purchased this Engineering and Land Surveying practice that had been established in 1950. (Continued page 2) Consider $2.25 million Town office scheme ' Council members of the Town of Newcastle have received a proposal for new Town offices which could cost in the neighbourhood of $2.25; million according to a report submitted by Don Smith, planning director. In the Smith report it is -recommended -recommended that $583,000 be placed in the budget in 1981 to purchase land, pay engineering engineering fees and other associated initial costs. The proposal calls for the turning of the sod for the new complex to be undertaken in the fall of 1982 with building million plus engineering fees of a possible! further $65,000. It has been suggested that in 1981 funding come from $421,000 from Hydro building permit charges plus some $200,000 from a reserve fund. Tjiere has been no indication. on how the remainder of the project would be funded and it may be suspected it could start coming from taxation in the year 1982. The matter was considered by Mayor Rickard and David Sims and referred to eh meeting of council on Thursday. The council at their regular meeting on Monday declined the offer with appreciation. Hulsman had run for the position of Mayor in the last election being defeated by Garnet Rickard by a 800 vote margin. ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE INFORMATION MEETING The Clarke High School Parent-Teacher Liason Committee invites the public to their meeting at the school on Thursday, March 5th at 7:30 p.m. when representatives of the Donwood Institute will discuss new effective programs as to alcohol and drug abuse. ' ' Parent - Son night held in Orono The seventh annual Parent and Son Night was held in Orono under the auspices of the Group Committee of the Otono Beavérs, Cubs and Scouts on Saturday evening. There was an excellent turnout turnout for the occasion when , a Roast Beef dinner was catered catered to by the ladies of the church. Mr. Willis Barraball, chairman of the local group committee acted as master of ceremonies for the evening and extended welcome to all those present' and as well complimented the leaders for the work they had undertaken for the boys in the community over the past year. Barraball introduced the head table; Roger Leetooze, president of the West Durham Scout Association; Rev.
