2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 4th; 1981 A',COMMENT WELL TAKEN In our recent attendance at the Clarke High School annual commencement we were more than impressed with a valedictory address that at one point touched upon a factor of life that is too often overlooked or at least never expressed. Valedictory adddresses are, in general, rather predictable and Nelda Knapp, this years valedictorian at Clarke High School somewhat followed the familiar line until she inserted the following paragraph. "I also want to thank the parents. Without them, many of us, especially me, would not be here tonight to receive these diplomas. The love, support and encouragement that my parents gave to me could not be equalled by anyone; they were always there when I needed them. Although the things you do are often taken for granted making your job a thankless one I'd like to tell you now that everything you do for us is greatly appreciated." , It was not altogether what Nelda said but the obvious sincerity in which she expressed her feelings. This sincerity came through loud and clear, Let us comntend Nelda for her thoughtfulness and her expression of thanks to one of the greatest of all relationships. Lawrence criticized for convention criticism According to a Toronto Star article this week Allan Lawrence, Lawrence, M.P. for Durham Northumberland, came under fire from the Conservative's party executive director, Paul Curley, for his remarks criticizing the organization of last week's Conservative convention. convention. Curley says he is insulted by the criticism by Allan Lawrence. The Toronto Star reported that Lawrence was sent a letter by Curley stating that "Your unnecessary and pn- warranted comments reflect on 450 staff and volunteers that have made this weekend a success - individuals that are loyal to the party and had no opportunity to publicly respond to your unjustified comments." It appears that Lawrence had made his comments during his speech in support of a candidate for an executive executive position. According to the Star Law- ■ rence had said that his candidate "is the type of individual who can apply pressure to the professionals at headquarters to get us better facilities and organization organization for the next general meeting." It appears that the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa was just not large enough to accommodate accommodate all the delegates and interested people who showed up for the convention. Letter to Editor MOTHERS ALLOWANCE The Canadian government; has felt a conscience for many years to support , young unwed mothers. The financial support differs depending on how many children they have, their rent, hydro and utility bill. I know of one mother, age twenty five with two* children who receives approximately 500.00 dollars every month. This amount may not seem like much but averaged out, it is a salary of 125.00 dollars à week. This young lady sends her children off to school and»then returns to sleep or to television television viewing. She does so five days a week, the sixth and seventh day she has the children home. This routine may sound similar to your grandparents' lives. She complains that she doesn't get enough money;- so I suggested for her to get a job! She was given apprentice job learning to be a hairstylist. hairstylist. Her mother's allowance allowance cheque was altered, allowing her to make sdme money before the cheque was reduced. One would think her very lucky to land that position. • She might gain her self worth ' back, and teach her children 1 some ideals. Not so! She quit three w.eeks after'because it was hard work. Shp was making only fifty dollars - more then her regular allowance allowance cheque. She had to put too much effort into learning to live again. Have we created young zombies who don't want to work for what they get in life? They made a mistake and brought a baby into this world, that you and I will pay for the rest of her life. Why is our society paying these unwed mothers to become uneducated, trade- less figures? They are only bringing up more and more children like themselves, Becomimg pregnant should not earn you a living! We are paying her a salary! I would like to see more business' and babysitting centres subsidized subsidized with this money. This unwed mother could then learn that the world owes her nothing, but will consciously consciously help her, if she helps . herself first. Renitç Dias 62 Andrews Road Orono , Letter to editor To the Editor : Ref. Town Council Our present Council, I fed, should go back to the drawing board in regards to the proposed budget. To even think of an increase in taxes in excess of 30 percent is just not justified. Then I read in the papers where the MAYOR said we have to cut the budget but he hopes they don't touch his new proposed ADMINISTRATION ADMINISTRATION BLD. (MONUMENT). (MONUMENT). Councillor HAMRE suggested they cut out the proposed pay increase for Council but could not receive ANY SUPPORT (WE ARE NOT IN COUNCIL FOR MONEY). The argument for a pay increase no doubt will be THE INCREASE COST OF LIVING FOR MEMBERS OF COUNCIL. EACH MEMBER OF REGIONAL COUNCIL RECEIVE IN EXCESS OF $2400. OF WHICH PART OF THIS IS NOT TAXABLE. How many of the taxpayers get this? If they need AN increase, then people on a fixed income should be allowed allowed the same decrease, then people on a fixed income should be allowed the same decrease in their taxes. Council fired the town Manager, Manager, then hired a lawyer in the in term who in the end will only cost more for one reason and another. (HIS ACCOUNT FOR THE FIRST NINE DAYS WAS IN EXCESS OF $2400.) Councillor HUBBARD SUGGESTS WE CLOSE THE OUTSIDE POOL AS IT IS RUNNING A DEFICIT OF $13,000. DO I NOW TAKE THIS AS THE NEW FITNESS FITNESS CENTRE WILL ALSO BE CLOSED AS IT IS ESTIMATED AT $60,000 DEFICIT. DEFICIT. MAYOR RICKARD allows closed meetings, then when somebody gets out of line, he puts a letter out to open council but still no one knows what the content of the closed meeting was. Several matters relating to 'personnel have been brought to the attention of certain members of Council and also THE MAYOR with no action taken to my knowledge. This is your money. The mayor did tell me that there were others WHO WERE WORSE OFFENDERS OFFENDERS BUT NO ACTION TAKEN.. Inmost jobs that the taxpayers work at, they have only one option "BE ON THE JOB". We also hear the argument what they do in other places. Personally; I don't give a DAMM about other places that is why I live here. In conclusion, I feel Council has lost all control like a ship at sea without a Captain. I feel that Council should take a long look at the job they were elected to do and reduce spending. This I feel can be done without the cost of the high legal fees. I must also say although I have never met Councillor HAMRE, F FEEL THAT SHE HAS THE GUTS OF HER CONVICTIONS CONVICTIONS TO THE. TAXPAYER BUT I ALSO FEEL THAT UNLESS SHE GETS OV|ft ON THE OTHER SIDE, SHE WILL BE FIGHTING A LOST CAUSE. -■ Yours truly, Ken Hooper' Kendal News Home is such a cosy word, Made up of letters four, And oh, the satisfaction When your key turns in the door! The little girl that they had adopted was more fortunate than some other African children as she would have a home with them. The mothers walked long distances with their washing on their heads in big baskets to the river to wash their clothes. The children children went along. Then the mothers carried water back to do the cooking outside over a fire. There was no school-. The boys of twelve had to work hard in the fields.' Our Sunday School children were ' most interested in the cute little girl from Kenya. Mr. Vanbodegon told us of the location of Kenya on the equator on thè east coast of Africa with other countries bn its borders. It took, them some time to become gclimatized, leaving our snow.behind and landing ,in Kerfya with a temperature of, over ( one, hundred degreës. Most of the lànd * is, a high ari'd" plain.
