Welfare expected to drop Durham Region is now expected a drop in Welfare cases during 1981 compared to that of 1980. The social Services Department had, ■ earlier this year, estimated an increase in welfare cases of 9.1 percent. They now antièipate a decline of 2.2 percent. The new figure, a decline, is considered feasible due to a levelling off of cases in the last three months of 1900. Durham handles more than 6000 cases each month in the Region. The drop in expected cases' has allowed the department to cut more than one million dollars from their budget which would be a saving to regional taxpayers in an. amount of $265,000. Part of the reason for the levelling off of welfare claims may be due to the work of the welfare investigator, states John DeHart, chairman of the committee. , .DeHart feels people are becoming somewhat weary of trying to beat the system, and that the investigator has been a great deterrent. , It has cost Regional taxpayers taxpayers some $2.7 million for welfare during 1980.
