(Continued from page 4) Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 1st, 1981-5 No extra help to offset Regional Police costs . Gary Herrema, chairman of the Region of Durham, has returned from Queen's Park with no extra help from the province to help offset an increase of 19 percent in Regional Police costs. Her- rema met with the Ontario Solicitor's department at the request of Regional council following their budget discussions discussions last week. Council withheld final approval of their budget until they had heard from the Province. The, Regional Police budget for 1981 is $2.5 million over that of 1980, a 19 percent increase. Other Regional departments have come within a seven percent increase of their 1980 budgets. The total 1981 budget budget amounts to $93 million. million. The province has made it clear there is no more monqy for policing in Durham and has held this position also for the Region of Niagara. Herrema said the only, recourse now is to appeal to the Minister of Intergovernmental Intergovernmental Affairs, Tom Wells to ask for equalization for the Region. The chairman also said that council might be forced to cut back on the police budget so that property owners do not face a large increase in taxation. Herrema indicated that raises negotiated for uniformed uniformed officers have played a part in the record-size budget. A first class officer will earn $29,800 as of January 1982. It has been pointed out that there are only two elected councillors on the Regional Police Commission while three members are appointees appointees of the province. Tom Jermyn, chairman of the police commission has claimed that budget constraints constraints ; have been affecting services. e Playground Leaders' Course 1981 The Town of Newcastle, Department of Community Services is conducting a Playground Leaders Training Course at the Bowmanville High School on the followirig dates: April 6, 8,13,15, 22, 27, 29, May 4 and 6,1981 from 6:30 o.m. to 8:30 p.m. * The course content involves Leadership, Sports on Playgrounds, Playgrounds, Behaviour Patterns, Drama, Arts & Crafts, First Aid, Intergration of Mentally Retarded, Program Planning and Special Events.
