The Official Opening of Education Week for The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education will take place in Bowjnanville High School on Monday, April 27, 1981. An informal program will take place beginning at 7:00 p.m. In the corridors of the school, there will be displays from all the area schools. Musical groups will perform. In areas such as art, students will be involved to demonstrate the progression from Kindergarten to Grade 13. Students will also participate in physical education,-family studies, business and technical education activities. From 8:00p.m. to 9:00 p.m., a'formal program will be presented in the auditorium of the school. A number of bands and musical groups will perform on stage, involving children from different grade levels. The Town of Newcastle taxpayers are being asked for an additional $559,000 in 1981 for the operation of, the. Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education. The Board in its budget' submission last Thursday announced a 7.70 percent increase for taxpayers in Newcastle. The requisition by the Board in 1980 from Newcastle amounted to a .total of $5,517,858 while in 1981 this? rose to $6,112,899. According to the Board figures the increase in mills will reach 11.125. On the average home in Newcastle assessed for taxation at $2500 the increase would be $27.56. Newcastle residents pay almost one-third of the total , 1981 requisition from local taxpayers amounting to $17,377,100. Residents of Cobourg will provide $2,211, 664 to the Board with Port Hope and Hamilton Townships Townships coming in at around $1.5 million each. Newcastle taxpayers are to provide $3,167,763 for elementary elementary educational purposes and $2,945,136 for secondary education. In 1980 these ffgures were $3,048,895. and $2,468,963. Port Hope is the only municipality to note a decrease decrease in their educational tax in 1981. Their allotment has dropped some 1.47 percent.
