4OronO Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 20th, 1981 VAN BELLE ON GARDENING Get Ready - Get Set - This is the time of year that we all get itchy fingers to get started with the an- 1 nual planting of the Annuals, After a long winter we want to get out into the garden and fill it up with color, so that we can enjoy the dazzling displays throughout the summer. This is the week that you should get everything ready so that you can plant next week. I feel that this weekend is just a little bit early, and I predict that we are going to have some frost over the weekend. Most annuals come right out of the greenhouse and are not hardened off, so if you can you should leave them in the garage for a few days, and bring them outside when the weather is warm to harden them off. This week get the ground worked up, for the annuals. Spade over the area where the annuals are going to be planted. Work in some compost either from the compost pile, or buy the composted composted manure and apply a liberal amount over the whole area. Then leave it for 4 to 5 days to let the soil warm up and rake it again td make a nice loose airable soil, so that it will be easy to plant the annuals. When planting annuals try to color coordinate by massing the same colors together, this will show up much better Go Gardening than when you plant a variety of color. Most annuals are grown in plant boxes and this year find out how many plants there are in a box, and what size the box is. Since the cost of production is going up eacli with increase of fuel, a lot of growers are going to a smaller box making making it appear that you'are getting a better buy, but check out the price and amount in the box. Often the box that costs the most is the best buy. For an excellent display of color around the evergreen in front, try using geraniums. Keep them all the same color. I like to plant all the evergreen beds with one color geraniums and then we spread a layer of cocoa beans over top of the bed. This will keep tfie weeds down and will look nice all summer with very little work. For shady area's try the dwarf Impan- . tiens, which come in a range of colors to match any home. They will spread out to as much as a foot across. Coleus is another plant that will do well in the shade. It is better to remove all the flowers . when planting. This will induce the plant to start producing new flower heads and also will give the plant a chance to become better established.
