Roger Worth Canada's farmers are in 1er the gun these days as va >us groups complain that fai marketing board systems for mhny commodities are kee, ng food prices at high leve . C le statistical study after anot :r, ' it seems# contends that rmers are getting better than heir fair share when it come: to pricing products such i milk and eggs. Soi e marketing boards effective effective ' set prices for such comme titles,, ensuring farmers receive enough cash to cover expense and earn a profit on their operations. Roger Worth is Director, Public Affairs, Canadian Federation of Independent Business. Somç boards also control production through a, licensing licensing system, theoretically ensuring ensuring supply does not surpass demand. Because farmers have been allowed to overproduce on many occasions, and products have been destroyed or dumped, all marketing boards have been given a bad name. Marketing boards do have continuing problems to work out. Farmers are individualistic individualistic and not easily controlled, even by farmer boards. Nevertheless, amid the coinplainers, there are a lot of Canadians who believe farm marketing board systems are workable, providing protection protection for smaller farmers in a cyclical industry. For example, in a recent survey conducted by the 60,000-member Canadian Federation of Independent Business, 48Vo favored allowing allowing farmers to police themselves themselves in order to control output output of various commodities. Only 26% opposed such boards, and 26% were undecided. undecided. It's interesting to note that Federation membership of 60#000 people operating their own small and,medium-sized businesses, 'includes only a small percentage of farmers, _ While the 48% who supported supported farm marketing boards is not particularly overwhelming, overwhelming, It at least indicates thfe farmers are not alone in their view that smaller farm operators, operators, deserve protection. Learn Sail Boarding at Provincial Parks If you long for new thrills and excitement on your summer summer vacation this year, sail boarding -- a "first" for 16 provincial parks -- could be just the ticket. * Lessons in the sport will be availablë in the parks participating participating in the program, Ontario Natural Resources Minj|ter Alan Pope announced. Mr. Pope said permanent sail boarding schools will operate operate in Pinery, Rondeau, Earl Rowe and Darlington parks and at the Outlèt- Sector of Sandbanks Provincial Park from June 6 to September 8. The mobile schools are located located at Presqu'île, Charleston Lake, Silver Lake, Balsam Lake, McRae Point, Long Point, Rock Point, Cyprus Lake, Wheatley, Ipperwash and Iroquois Beach provincial parks. Sail boarding, also known as wind surfing, involves a surf board-like hull which glides across the water powered by the wind. The sail not only catches the wind but also gives enthusiasts complete control of their craft. Sail boarding expert Jeff Miller, of Toronto, describes the sport as "simply the union of thg wind, the water, and you." Mr, Pope said that the sport, which has grown from a well" ■ kept Califomiasecret in 1967 ,■ to one of the largest sailcraft class in the world, "is an exciting and safe sport that even children children can .enjoy. ' A brochure explaining the 1 program and listing school dates for participating parks may be obtained from Ontario Travel, 'Centres. * Representatives from the program will be available at the Ontario Travel Centre in ' the Eaton's Centre from June . 1 - 6 to answer farther questions.
