4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 17, 1981 A cough is more than just hot air A loud, raspy "cougher" in à crowded theatre is à nuisance to those about him. It should be remembered however, that the common .cbrigh is a part of the body's vital defense or immune system, and physiologically speaking, is potentially a lifesaving lifesaving reflex action. During a cough a powerful rush of air is expelled from the respiratory tract, at a velocity of up to 500 miles per hour. The usual purpose of the cough is to clear the airways airways of some irritating or obstructing substance that potentially could damage the lungs, or interfere with the smooth exchange of oxygeh and carbon dixoide iri the body. People who are unable to cough (such as those under general anesthesia) are in danger of serious disease because they cannot protect their lower respiratory tracts from foreign substances. The Lung Association offers offers these two important reminders about all coughs: A cough is not a disease, but rather a symptom-that something is wrong in the body. Anyone who has a Cough that lasts more than a couple of weeks should be seen by a doctor, who may in turn suggest an examination by a respiratory disease specialist. Most coughs are self- limiting; that is, they go away in a few weeks, even if you do nothing at all. If you are a cigarett'é smoker, a cough is in your future. However, if you quit smoking that cough will most likely disappear within four weeks. For more information on lung disease, or for help to quit smoking contact Durham Region Lung ' Association-the Christmas Seeal people at 723-3151. Its a matter of life and breath. Brooklin plan given go-ahead Freezing Ontario Strawberries For only a few weeks in June each year, we can enjoy fresh Ontario strawberries. Marketing specialists at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food: suggest you stretch those few weeks into months by freezing a winter's supply of Ontario strawberries. Choose the freshest, ripest berries and freeze as soon as possible after purchase. Berries Berries should be plump and have a solid-red color. Just before freezing, gently wash the berries in cold water, pat dry and hull. Strawberries may be frozen with or without sugar. When you plan to serve frozen strawberries as fresh berries, it is recommended to freeze them with sugar. The sugar helps to preserve the texture and fresh flavor of the berries. For quartered and sliced berries, combine every 4 cups of strawberries with V* cup sugar. For whole berries, combine every 4 cups of berries with 'A cup sugar. Strawberries can also be frozen without sugar, but the texture and color are not as well preserved. These unsweetened frozen strawberries strawberries are recommended for use in jam, sauce and baked goods. , Another alternative is crushed strawberries. They are ideal to freeze without sugar because texture retention retention is not as important as with whole or sliced berries. Whichever freezing method' you choose, package in freezer bags or containers, label, date and freeze. A SAFER WAYIO SDUrE By a vote of 19-9 Regional councillors last Wednesday approved plans for development development of Brooklin which would see the centre move from a population of 1600 to 10,500 by 1990. The debate over the Brooklin scheme has been under discussion for a number of weeks with the Regional finance department calling it a financial plug for the Region but with the planning planning department stating the scheme is far pre-mature and could turn out to be a costly venture for the Region. It was pointed out that the Brooklin 'l^plan would be no different than any other in the Region as far as momentum to build housing under the present housing climate. Existing Brooklin residents have also entered the fray seeing seeing the development as an opportunity opportunity to have water and ■ sewers extended to the hamlet at the cost of the develôper They have claimed.areas of pollution which has not been Substantiated by the, health •official for Durham. It's designed to help reduce . the high percentage of traffic violations and accidents by new drivers. Statistics show that in < Ontario, new drivers, regardless of age, have accidents and break the traffic laws far more than experienced drivers. The Probationary System is designed to' make these ' drivers more aware of thç traffic traffic laws for everyone's safety. So, néw drivers who ignore the laws,, or drive carelessly •, during the two-year probationary probationary period, Will have their driver's licence suspended for 30 days when six demerit points have been accumulated.
