better - Cureatz told at senate Sam Cureatz attending a planned meeting at the Kirby Senate in the Kirby general store faced a variety of solution solution from local farmers as to a solution to the farm industry. industry. At one point the M.P. was told "One would get better odds at Los Vegas rather than with farming". Some fifteen were in attendance attendance at the meeting at which Cureatz explained he wanted to get input for the farm industry industry from the farming community. community. Cureatz was told that the price of fuel was as much a deterant to a profitable farm operation as was high interest rates. S. B. Rutherford proposed that the Ontario government set forth a 'D'.Day at which • point the government, would negotiate a ten percent increase increase in beef prices at the farm gate. To pay for this increase increase Rutherford suggested a 7 percent retail sales tax on beef at the store which would include also beef that had been imported into Canada. Rutherford said this would still allow the free entefprjse' system to continue to operate and customers would pay the increase. He suggested the sales tax would come off when the price of beef at the farm gate reached the. in- ' creased price including the ten percent. He pointed out that imported imported beef with the retail sales tax would be helping to pay Ontario farmers in meeting their cost of production. production. Other suggestions included a cut-back in importation of red meat into Canada with the reasoning that in a free market Canadian red meat price would take care of itself. Another suggestion came forth that retail increases in beef should be passed along directly to the farmer not to the government or to the retail outlets. There was also a complaint about the Cattlemen's Association which one said was .run by an executive that ' were not in farming. A proposal to tax of farm «{buildings and usable farm kind was not seen as a solution solution for the farmer. • .There was also complaint over the fact that such as Canada Packers were importing importing from the U.S. and thus depressing the red meat market for Canadian farmers. It was pointed out :that there was no quota on how much could be imported at this time. * * As to the opinion if Lome Henderson; Minister of Agriculture was a 'Fumblebum* the answer was 'Yes'. In speaking with Rutherford Rutherford following the meeting he said unfortunately there were few concrete suggestions but a lot of grumbling. The fair runs through July on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 16th - 19th, and the tent has been approved for every day except the 19th. Approval of the beer tent had been granted two years previous to 1981. At that time, approval was needed only from LLBO. However, for the first time, approval is also needed from local council council to serve liquor outdoors in a public park. The Lion's Club of Oshawa, sponsors of the beef tent, told council that about $5,000 had been spent in order for the site to meet regulations set by LLBO and the Durham Region Board of Health. The Club is afraid that if they don't hâve the right to serve beer on Sunday, they will end up with a loss.
