Local crops now looking good DURHAM AGRI-NEWS By Rod Stork, Assoc. Agricultural Rep. * Crop conditions across Durham continues to be quite favourable, with adequate rainfall and average, temperatures for the time of year. Poor drying conditions, during June slowed down haying operations on many farms. However, winds the week of June 22nd and a drop in humidity have brought about much better haying conditions. It would appear that there will be an above-average hay crop this year. With good moisture conditions prevailing, a good second-cut should also be available. Winter wheat looks excellent excellent across the area with harvest likely to start in late July. Harvesting of processing processing peas has. begun, ànd yields are above average on tlfe early plantings. Oats and barley crops are also doing well with almost all fields fully fully headed out. Weed control has" been quite variable in corn 1 fields across Durham. More scufflijng than fiormal has . been carried out to .try and control late germinating annual annual broadleaf a'nd grass. Despite severe - cold, ft would appear that there has been a good fruit set in area apple orchards. Other tender fruit crops, such as: plums, pears and cherries, were hit quite hard by winter injury and a light crop is expected. Tobacco transplants are ' doing very well with no irrigation irrigation required as yet. Strawberry season has been underway since June 22nd. Area growers report a good crop thus providing consumers consumers with an excellent chance to fill their freezers and to make jams and canned strawberries. There is some concern in Western Ontario with regards to damage by armyworm. We would urge fàrmers to maintain maintain spot checks in grain and corn fields for any sign of feeding injury. .
