It was more than 20 years ago that Dr. James Mut- chmor, then secretary of the board of evangelism of the United Church of Canada, told a Whitby audience he considered race track betting as sinful as beverage room drinking. In those days, it was even against the law to buy Irish Sweepstake lottery tickets although there never was a prosecution of a winner. • Since then, of course, governments have got into the gambling business via Wintario, Lottario, and all the rest. Gambling has become respectable - if operated by governments. . We thought when governments governments first venturêd into lottery lottery land that the churches would embark on a crusade against gambling but that never really got organized. It, therefore; came as something of a surprise last week to note t{iat all is not happiness on the gambling front. It was left up to Chief Ken Johnston, of Winnipeg, to come out against lotteries. Speaking to a seminar at the 11th annual congress for the prevention of crime, Johnston said government should stop urging the public to enter the "make-believe world", of the gambler by promoting the sale of lottery tickets. "I'm saying governments, should get out of the business of betting," he said. It's not an opinion that he, alone, holds. "There has to be a better way to raise money for religious and educational projects, as well as other charities, than through gambling or the sale of liquor," liquor," says Durham's Deputy Deputy Police Chief Ken Young. Johnston pointed out for his audience that government's government's participation in lotteries lotteries leads to a double standard standard in Canada. Government-run lotteries and t Newcastle group carry out survey Keith Barr of Newcastle Village spoke to council Monday morning with the purpose of bringing council up to date as to developments of a museum in the Village. Barr told council that the Newcastle Lions Club had secured an agreement with the owners of the old Catholic Church in Newcastle race-track betting are considered considered legal but off-track betting through a bookmaker is considered illegal. To all of which we could add the question: "How many people out there are actually actually planning their future with a Wintario win expected to take care of them?" Maybe it's time Canadians took another look at the changing times when an activity activity that was considered illegal illegal and sinful 20 years ago now becomes a government- promoted money-maker. that will hold the property to the end of September. Barr said that in the meantime meantime survey is to be made of the village and surrounding area to see what interest there is in the development of a museum in Newcastle Villlage. He expected that the survey would be completed by the end of August. When questioned by Counc. Cowman as to the purpose of the survey as to whether it was financial support support or moral support they were interest in obtaingBarr said it was financial support they were interested in from the survey. Barr also told council that the Newcastle group had been assured there would be no maintenance costs for the first five years as this would be looked after. He said the Newcastle group could be looking for interim financing but this had not as yet been established.
