* 1 ' WEAREVER ; SM4P ua A VjmWt berNARoin 4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday August 12, 1981 van Belle on garden- ING You asked for it What is wrong with our Flowering Crab? We seem to have all types of white webs in clusters spread throughout the tree which are full of caterpillars. What you have is called the tent caterpillar in its nest which they forage from and return to at night. To give you a little bit of background: most things in nature recycle year after year with the right weather ahd egological conditions. The caterpillar will deposit eggs bn a branch in the fall which resembles a tightly knit net but actually is a mass of eggs: In the spring when the weather starts to warm up to 70 degrees, the eggs start to hatch and will produce small larvae which will, start building the so called Tent of white webbing in which they start to mature and turn into caterpillars pr worms. Then they start to forage outside of their tent and can strip whole trees completely. The best time to control them is in the early spring when you see them start to form their tent and when they are still inside by wiping them out with a stick and removing • them from the crotches of the branches. Once the tent has been fully formed it is much harder to get rid of them as you would have to completely remove them and burn the tent with the insects inside. Since they forage out throughout the day, the best time to do this is in the evening evening when they have returned to their tents. There are two chemicals which can also be used and will have to be applied applied at least twice for control. control. The product Sevin is the best either in a dust form or as the liquid suspension form. Make sure that you cover the whole area and check again in two days at which time you can finish them off ' with another application. application. Diazinon can also be used but may have to be applied three times. We have just bought a new house and would like to seed in a new lawn. When should we get started? The best time of the year to start a new lawn is in the late summer and early fall when the day temperatures are still warm and the nights are starting starting to cool off to give the seed a chance to germinate and not burn up. Also at this time of the year we have a lot of dew and rain fall which will help to get it started. TO help to prepare the, soil for the seeding, now would be a good time to work up the soil and kill, as many weeds as possible by letting them germinate germinate and then cultivate it again killing off the young weed plants. A good application application of manure and peatmoss applied at this time and then worked in the soil will give you a good base to start with. Make sure that you buy good grass seed especially for our area. Probably a mix is the best which will include a fine grass and a nursing grass to help them get off to a good start. Until next week, happy gardening.
