Decathlon Gold to M. Popadich Summer Games Gold winner from Orono • Milan Popadich of Orono won the prestigious event of the track and, field events it the Canada Summer Games in Thunder Bay last week. Popadich entered the events with the high speed score of 7,032 (hand timing) and in winning the decathlon in Thunder Bay ran up a score of 6,787 (electronic timing). timing). His closest rival was Rene Lapierre of Quebec with 6,718 points. Popadich said he placed first in both the hurdles and (he long jump and placed well in the other eight events. It was this corisistancy which earned him the gold for the event. Popadich was also entered in the 110m hurdles and said he 'blew the event' with a fifth place finish. He had expected expected to do much better in the 110m hurdles. As to the future the fourth- year student at McMaster University said he would like , to enter the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia. He said to do so he would have to increase his points at least by another 600 to able to qualify for the 'games. Milan has done well in athletics since leaving Orono and has been honoured at the University athletic level as well as being honoured as male .athlete of the year at McMasters. OBSERVING SECOND ANNIVERSARY The residents of the Orono Senior Citizens Complex will be observing their second anniversary this Thursday evening with a beef barbecue and an evening of musical and qther entertainment. entertainment. Competitions continue continue this week. * Above Popadich is shown completing the 400m event of the decathlon. 450 sign petition against strikes by public workers Honoured with Service Award # Over 450 residents of the Orono area signed a petition last Thursday and Friday asking asking the Federal government to pass legislation which would make it illegal for public service xyorkers to go out on strike. The petition was spearheaded by Mrs. Ruby Burnside and Miss Isobel Hayda® of the Orono area and with the assistance of volunteers, the ladies sought support for their petition > both Thursday, and Friday. The Saturday rain storm, thwarted plans for its circulation circulation on Saturday. A copy of the petition has been placed at the Orono times ror the next week where anyone wishing to sign it may do so. At this time the petition will be sent on to Ottawa. Mrs. Burnside said she was pleased with the response from the Orono community. She said if other communities would do likewise it could Jjave some impact with the government at Ottawa. It was stated that ninety- five percent of those approached approached signed the petition. Mrs, Burnside is seeking the assistance of Mr. Allan Lawrence to present the petition petition in Ottawa. Mrs. Isobel Challice was honoured last Thursday evening evening with a surprise presentation presentation of a Service Award from District 17 of the Ontario Horticultural Societies. The presentation was made by Al. .Foss, District Director of District 17. Mrs. Challice is serving her second ■ term as Assistant District Director and has been associated with Horticultural Horticultural Societies for the past twenty-five years. She has been most, active with the local Orono Society and served served in the capacity of president for four years. Al. Foss in making the presentation said it would be impossible to note all her work with Hôr- ticulture. Assisting in the presentation presentation last week was Mrs. Ann Evans, (right) who is k -y for District 17 and' as well an active member of the Oron'o Horticulfural Society. Congratulations. • RAISE OVER $1,000 AT BARBECUE The Orono Arena and Comfnunity Centre Fund Raising Committee 1 ' made a total of $1Q05.60 at the annual beef barbecue held in thé Orono Park last' Wednesday evening. There was a good crowd in attendance to enjoy the barbecue and friendly association which has long been a feature of the event. It is expected that with .(the dinners at the Orono Fair, the Fund Raising Committee will have completed its objective of raising some $270,000.00 from the general public for the project. project. i - POURING CONCRETE AT ^ARLINGTON GENERATING STATION Canada Building Materials have started pouring concrete at the Darlinçton Hydro Generating station and 130 cu. meters were poured Mqnday at Unit 2 of the Reactor Auxiliary bay, an equipment area. The pouring of cement will be an ongoing event over the nfext eight years. The value Of the Canada Building Material contract is $30'million. Miss Sue Stickley informs us that there are now 600 working at the station with 3000 expected on site at the. beak of construction construction in 1985. *
