Mayor Rickard and Ward Three council members, Hamre and Woodyard, met last night with the Çlàrke Museum Archives Board concerning concerning a letter of objection from the local board as to a proposed redesignation of the Kirby Heritage site south of the Old Kirby Schoolhouse which is now used as a museum. Initially council had designated a parcel of land including the old School bus as a Heritage site'. Now wants to redesignate a section of the property south of the school and turn it over to the , Ministry of Transportation and Communication for commercial purposes. Council Council intends to leave the schoolhouse and some surrounding surrounding property designated for Heritage purposes. Council has received a letter letter from the Clarke Museum Board objecting to the redesignation stating that such a move would put • limitations on their development, development, planning and subsequent subsequent growth of the Kirby School Museum. With this objection facing council the matter would have to go before the Ontario Municipal Board before any action could be taken by the town to deal with the Ministry . The lands had been dedicated in the summer of 1980 for Heritage purposes. It is the intention of council council to trade lands in the Kirby area with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Communications in order that the Ministry may make lands available for the Kirby Store relocation south of the old Kirby School. The lands now south of the old school are owned by the Town and are regulated by the Heritage designation. The. ORONO-LOCKHART The students are settled and things are running smoothly for Orono- Lockhart Public Shool, once again. School began on Tuesday, Tuesday, September 8, 198 V and for the kindergarden students, school starts on Thursday, September 1981. The total enrolment students has risen from the previous year. _ In the sctioil: year 1980-1981, the total enrolment was 350 students. This year, the total enrolment has jumped to 361 students. The number of kindergarden students has made adramatic change from 41 students last year to 51 students this year. A screening test has been set up for the kindergarden pupils which is an "Early Identification Program."The final day for screening is Wednesday, September 16, 1981. Kindergarden classes' will be two and a half hrs. of instruction. Morning classes run for 9:00 a.m. Mill 11:30 a.m. and "aj^ganoon classes run from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. The Newcastle- Northumberland Board of Education is holding a sobar test and also a math test throughout the county. The sobar testing is only for the grade 4's. Sobar Tests are English Learning Tests using computer cards. This test is held during the first two weeks of school. A committee has been, ■ formed for the "Year- of the, Disabled." This committee' v will be working hard until next June. This year 1 , grades 3,4, and 6 are taking French classes twenty minutes long and next year grades 3,4,5, and 6 will be at- (Continued page 2) ORONO FAIR DRAW WINNERS Mrs. Deanna Barrett, Bowmanville, was the winner.of the Orono Harness Horsemens Association draw held at the fair on Sunday. The prize was a portable television set. Miss Kathy Jury, Newcastle, was the winner of the lace table cloth drawn at the Orono Senior Citizens 4-T Club booth at the fair. This was an excellent booth displaying and selling crafts made 6y the residents of the Orono Senior Citizens LrJdge. KENDAL EAGLES WIN TUG-O-WAR AT FAIR The Kendal Eagles baseball team were the top winners of the Orono Fair Tug-O-War contest on Friday evening. They out-pulled all contenders. Brief discussion centred around some of the contents of the minutes prompting Councillor Councillor Hubbard to suggest that the secretary was editorializing in her minutes and that the council representatives representatives on the board should see that such comments be struck from the minutes at the next meeting of the board. Councillor Hubbard was referring to a section in the minutes being, "Mrs. Hamre undertook to enlighten us on the state of affairs regarding the Morris property, after it was made clear to her that the discoutesies of the Council are deplorable, in that the Board has never been informed informed of the Council's decision by anyone in council. Our only source of information has been the. newspaper, a risky source at best. Mrs. Hamre made it official that we do not get the Morris Building." Councillor Cowman asked if a letter did not go to the board following the decision by council that they would not support the purchase of the Morris house in Kirby for museum purposes. It was stated that such a letter was not sent to the board due to the mail strike.'
