Bunny power through the ear saves dn energy Reading through one of our trade magazine's, I came across this little gem of a story, and I could not help but to pass this on, since in an indirect way it is within my scope of writing. Energy is a word that has been given headlines over the past few years and will probably probably go down in history as the source of this century. Bill Schultz, a greenhouse operator on the west coast of the U.S.A. has come up with a cheap, efficient and Edible way to create k lush, tropical climate for his plants in the greenhouse. He has 30,000 sq. ft, of greenhouse in which he grows all types of tropical plants for the wholesale market. He heats about a third of his greenhouses with BUNNY POWER. The rabbits rabbits have a body temperature of 103 degrees and their long ears work as radiators to, warm up a cold room. His twelve months experiment experiment has discovered that 450 rabbits will generate 180,000 BTU. (BTU are used to measure the amount of heat required. to increase the temperature of a pound of water , by dhe degree) per hour. To compare it with a commercial gas heater which , produces 290,000 BTU per' hour, so you can see that BUNNY POWER produces a lot of energy. 1 Rabbit breeders have always had a problem with too much heat, and greenhouse operators have a problem with too little heat. Putting the two' - together seemed like an ideal solution. When the weather is zero outside the rabbits can raise the temperature to 58 degrees, which is adequate for plant growth, or they just add a gas heater for extra heat. He has been getting so ' much heat that he even heats the potting room, shipping area and loading dock on rabbit heat. The rabbits he sells to local stores, which buy everything he produces. He is planning to expand to have 2000 females, which in turn can produce 44 to 52 rabbits per year, giving an an-' nual production of over 100,000 per year. ■ The rabbits are kept in cages with plants sitting on top, the only problem he encountered, encountered, the urine falling from the cages contains a lot of ammonia, which burns the leaves of the plants. Now they have come with a system where the cages are raised and the urine and the manure, are flushed twice a day into a holding tank, which in turn produces methan gas which is, used as a heating source when rabbit power is not enough. When there - is no more , methane gas, the manure is used for fertilizer in the greenhouse, to grow plants to feed the rabbits, or to be used to grow the tropical plants for his wholesale business. , So here is your chance for the home greenhouse to grow your, own 'foodj vegetables for the table and a low cholestopal rabbit méat to feed the whole family. , , Hint for the week: Check your* lawn for chinch bug, since they are rampant all over, the Durham region. Time to apply the winter fertilizer. fertilizer. Until next week, Happy Happy Gardening. Asthma course to be in Osh awa Does you child have asthma?
