It was decided by the Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge that the first Senior Citizens Development would be in Orono and the second would be in Newcastle Village. It is a matter of record now of the many problems problems that the Orono Development went through over a period of years before it was approved by Government Government Bodies, Canada Mortgage Mortgage and Housing Corporation Corporation etc. In July 1977, before approval of the Orotio Development, the Lions Club of Newcastle formed a Committee Committee of three, namely, Maurice H. There was very good co-operation in these meetings and the Committee was welcomed by the Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge. When the Orono Development Development was approved the Committee Committee of three from Newcastle Newcastle Village had some very cooperative cooperative meetings and discussions with the Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge regarding the immediate immediate start on developing a Senior Citizens Project in Newcastle Village. It .■ was decided that as the Executive Members of the Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge came from a very large area that Newcastle Village should form its own group for the purpose of expediting matters and that the Durham Countv Senior Citizens Lodge would assist and meet with us whenever they Were requested to do so. (This they did in excellent co-operation.) As a result of discussions the Newcastle Lodge for Senior and Family Dwellings was formed and incorporated. incorporated. Mr. M.H. Now Newcastle entered the long road of searching for a suitable location in the Village, doing a Needs Study, many discussions with Canada Mortgage and Housing Housing Corporation. (Their rules and regulations changed at least three or four times during during our discussions.) Meeting with Newcastle Town Council Council and various other matters. , At one period of time the Canada Mortgage and Housing Housing Corporation représentative représentative in Oshawa, with whom we had been dealing, was promoted to a position in Toronto. Somehow during the transfer of responsibility from Oshawa our entrie Canada Mortgage and Housing Housing Corporation records disappeared. Just one of many frustrations through the years until at 'last the Senior Citizens Project in Newcastle Village was approved. approved. During the time of obtaining approval the Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge loaned the Newcastle Village Group interest interest free money when required. required. The Lions Club of Newcastle posted their support support with a budget to furnish the commons room when completed. The Newcastle Lodge after 1 a period of time, enlisted the aid of the East Central Ontario Ontario Development Foundation Foundation to assist in expediting the project. As a matter of interest interest it should be mentioned that a number of existing Senior Citizen Developments were visited by the Newcastle Group before it was decided on thé type of building etc. that would be developed. Mr. Don Wilson-the contractor was of'great assistance in this matter. It should be mentioned here that Keith D. Barr, hav- f ing been elected to Newcastle Town Council for the 1979-1980 term resigned for the Lodge due'to the present Conflict Of Interest Legislation Legislation presently in force in this Province. This would then have him clear to deal with building matters at Committee Committee , and Council Meetings without any repercussions on the Newcastle Lodge, Mrs. Judith .Miklos took over Keith D.
