Winter ski-touring in Ontario By: Tony Sloan Ontario's huge Algonquin Park, already internationally famous among hikers,, canoeists, rial it re photographers and campers in summer, has now captured the appreciative eye of crosscountry crosscountry skiers in wintertime. The recent introduction of hut-to-hut skiing in the park has aroused keen interest among nordic skiers seeking a new experience in Canada. The heated huts allow the full enjoyment of /a winter wilderness at ah easy pace with food, comfort and a deep woods 'scene at days's end. The three principals who conceived the program are Robin Hughes, a nearby Haliburton native who is a geotechnical expert with On- trio Hydro; Bill Morre, who has done geological exploration exploration in northern British Columbia Columbia and Saskatchewan and is currently associated with an enviornmental engineering fir; and Neil Downey, a geologist who, like his two confreres, has years of experience experience in year-round travel and association with Christmas rapidly now approaching By: Rod Stork, Assoc. Agricultural Representative SEASONS GREETINGS! - During the past week, Mother Nature has given us a chilly reminder that the winter season is upon us. We are, also, reminded everywhere we look, that Christmas ' is rapidly approaching. approaching. Not long after that, we enter a New Year with all its expectations, fears, sorrows and joys. The year, 1981, has been one of matjy highs and lows for people in all parts of our society. Many would say that the lows are ahead of the highs and that this will happen happen again in 1982. Recently, 1 had the opportunity opportunity to represent Ontario at the first National Rural Youth Conference in Ottawa. The program sponsored by the Junior Farmers' Association Association of Ontario brought together rural young people from all across Canada. During During the conference, delegates discussed many things of interest interest including Canadian unity, accepting a challenge, problems in agriculture, the role of a leader in the community community and many more topics. The thing that really stood out to me was the display of enthusiasm and positive attitude that the delegates displayed. People might say, "What would you expect from people not yet in the real world?" I can tell you that these people are in the real world. Many of them are farming, many had jobs away from the farm, others were in University or College getting ready to go into the working world. , These people had concerns and they can foresee problems, problems, but they are not just prepared to throw up their hands and walk away. No, they want to try and solve the problems. Tliey want to get involved and they will be a vital part of our future. One of the speakers at the Conference stressed the importance importance of setting goals for ourselves and then establishing our priorities, so that we can reach our goals. As we approach the festive season, maybe we all should step" back and look at ourselves. Where are we as individuals going? What goals do we have? How will we accomplish those goals? It is during times of adversity that we really need to do this add try to set a course for the fyture. The Staff at the ministry of Agriculture and Food in Bowman ville would like to take this opportunity to wish all our friends - rural and urban urban -, a Very Merify Christmas! We trust that 1982 will bring you and yours new joy, new enthusiasm and continued good health.
