SCOTT MAYBEE STEPHANIE HOOD The Orono Figure Skating Club bolted into prominence last week-end through the outstanding accomplishments of two of its members, Stephanie Hood and Scott Màybee. Both members have won and earned the right to compete in the National Championships to be held in Montreal at the end of January. The two skaters competed in the 1983 Eastern Canadian Divisional Championship competitions held in Oshawa over the past week-end. Scott Maybee placed first in the Junior Mens while Stephanie Hood placed third in the Novice Ladies. Scott Maybee, 19, a resident resident of Oshawa with his home club being the Orono Figure Skating Club is also a member of the East York and Scarborough Club where he takes his training. Scott put on a great closing show of which he was pleased with along with his coach, June Barrington. Scott said he had skated well and that his coach was thoroughly pleased with his performance. performance. Last year Scott competed in the Canadians in Junior Mens and placed fifth. Stephanie Hood, R.R. 2 Orono, 15, has been a member of . the Orono Skating Club since starting skating and as well is a member of the Oshawa Club. There was great excitement in the Hood camp on Sunday when the final results of the Novice Ladies were announc'-. ed. The article stated the Town was to call upon the Ministry to produce produce an Impact Study for the possible updateing of the- municipal assessment rolls and as well ask for a study to, be carried out on a regional basis with the. Region-of Durham making such a request to the Ministry. Although this was discussed to some length at council the recommendation by Councs. Hamre and Taylor did not carry when taken to a vote of council. The motion to request the Impact Study was in fact defeated. DONT FORGET 'DANCING PLUS' SATURDAY Dancing Plus at Clarke this Saturday evening is an event for all age groups and will provide both great opportunities for dancing and fine entertainment. Plan to be part,of the outing. , Close-up Victoria Street in Orono The Town of Newcastle council gave three readings to a by-law on Monday in which a section of Victoria'Street east of Church Street in the Village of Orono will be closed closed and. the lands sold to the abutting owners. . This move by council is part of an agreement in which the Town will be able to officially officially establish Station Street through an agreement with Arthur McLaren. .McLaren on the other hand will be able to develop two residential lots on Station Street in the agreement. The official status of Station Station Street has never been settled settled down through the years and it was only recently that the Town, Region and A. McLaren came to agreement in the matter. Town Administrator,, Don Smith, informed council that, the closing by-law was necessary in order that the official official status of Station Street could be settled. He said the Town has no. other alternative alternative than to deed the lands to the abutting owners. At this point Mr. McLaren must have an agreement with these land owners and to make the necessary arrangement arrangement in order that the candi- , lions of'the agreement car, be fulfilled. The Administrator said if .McLaren does not, have agreement with the three landowners then the conditions conditions of th'e agreement could not to • meet. Keith Barr in a submission submission to council on'*Mon- day suggested that council petitiori the Ministry . of Housing and Urban Affairs to undertake .a review of the Durham Regional structure. The submission was presented as input to a document document which will be presented by the Town at the provincial Eastern Caucus meeting. Counc. Barr' pointed out that in the early 1970s pre- Regional studies it was suggested suggested that the Town of • Newcastle should be much smaller, arguably an' administratively administratively more efficient unit. Barr suggested the Town request a review of the existing existing boundary lines, with an analysis of the financial im-* plications of separating part of the former Darlington Township and all ( of Clarke Township from i the present Town of Newcastle. He felt such could be a productive exercise. ' • I» his submission Barr states that such a review might at the very least finally allay sôme lingering concerns about the advantages of Regional'Government to the Town of Newcastle. Following the meeting Barr said his submission was only meant as input to the discus- » sion for the presentation to the Caucus. He also said it did not mean that his viewpoint viewpoint would be in the submission submission to Gyicus. He said he was referring to the ten western lots in Darlington Darlington where the people are oriented to Oshawa rather than the Town of Newcastle. « He said development in the •Courtice area is no further ahead today than in 1974 although something may happen happen this year. Counc. Hobbs said there was much .chance in the government ever considering a 1 division, of the Town of Newcastle at any time. Mayor Rickard said the Barr submission would be considered when he and the Administrator gave final consideration consideration to the Caucus submission submission later this week. It was pointed oùt at the meeting that all council members had Been asked for their input into the Caucus • submission other than what had been presented by staff to council. Counc. Barr's submission was directed to this request! , , There was no discussion of the Barr submission by council council on Monday .
