4, Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 12,1983 Novice see lots of action Ennismore invited the Orono Roughlcy Insurance Novice team to their tournament tournament on Dec. 27 and 28, 1982. In Orono's first game the boys played Peterborough Peterborough St. James. The Orono team seemed to be very tired after all _ the Christmas activities but managed to open the scoring on a goal by Bradley Minnis unassisted at the 5:35 mark of the first period. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, the St. James boys took over in the second period scoring two goals and adding another in the third period for a 3-1 victory over the Orono team. The next day Orono played another Peterborough team St. John's. They scored the opening goal of the game at 2:42 of the first period but that was all Jarret Prescott in goal for Orono was going to allow. Orono put on constant pressure on their opponents but their first goal didn't come until 7:09 of the second period when Dustin Reid scored unassisted. Dustin connected again in the third period assisted by Scott Williams and Brent Gates. A few seconds later Brent scored assisted by Shane Jones. The final goal was scored on a blast from the point by Sean McKenzie assisted by Greg Hooper and Ryan Rock. Final score Orono 4, St. Johns 1. The boys then moved into the Consolation Championship Championship very well this game controlling controlling the play a lot of the time but they had difficulty putting the puck in the net. Brent, Gates and Dustin Reid managed to get the only Orono goals while Ennismore found the mark four times therefore, they won the Consolation Consolation Championship. Maybe the next tournament will be the lucky one for our Orono boys. January's, Lindsay Novice and Orono played a very exciting exciting game. Orono opened the scoring at 1:28 of the first period on a fine shot from the point by Craig Nemis assisted by Cameron Esler. Then Lindsay lowered the boom scoring three quick goals in two and a half minutes. Jarret Jarret Prescott in goal closed the door on them from that point on. Dustin Reid fought back with a goal assisted by Jim Partner to make it a 3-2 score. In the second period Scott Hart wig picked up his first goal of the season on an excellent excellent play in front of the Lindsay goal, assisting on the play was Cameron Esler. Sixty-five seconds later Craig Nemis, fired his second goal Tennant Atoms tie Millbrook On Sunday, January 9th the Tennartt Fuel Atoms travelled to Millbrook seeking seeking revenge for the drubbing they took the last time theÿ were^here. This time, thank goodness, the result'was different different as we skated to a. scoreless draw with the powerful Millbroolc team, despite being shorfharided with a couple of our key players away. It was a tremendous team effort with everyone showing lots of hus- 1 tie and hard work. However, the first star just has to go to Mike Goodmurph.y, who time and time again robbed Orono Tyke 2 two up in two games On Saturday, January 8th Orono No. 2 Tykes hosted their first league game defeating Port Hope 7-0. Orono opened the scoring early in the first period with Stephen Stadilman getting the first 3 goals with 2 assists from Paul Flintoff. Unfortunately Unfortunately Stephen also got Orono's first penalty for tripping. tripping. Port Hope put on their power line while Orono was one player short but Orono held the Port Hope attackers off with (heir penalty killing line. In the second period Port Hope's good defensive paying paying held Orono down to only 2 goals, 1 by Stephen Stadilman and 1 by Timothy Hallo well with assists from Philip Cunningham and Stephen Stadilman. The third period had Port Hope trying to get on the scoreboard but Orono came back for 2 more goals, 1 by Stephèn Stadilman and 1 Neil Haines with an assist from Adam Wallace. With one minuté remaining in the third period Port Hope got a of the night to put Orono ahead 4-3. Orono continued to dominate the play in the third period but they were unable to increase their lead. Final score Lindsay 3, Orono 4. Monday, January 10th, Orono headed to Omemee with a strong desire to grab a win from the league leaders. Omemee No. 15 scored the only goal of the first period while Orono tied it up with the only goal in the second period by Brent Gates assisted by Dustin Reid and Jim Partner. The game had been very fast with both teams playing well both defensively and offensively. Jarret Prescott played a very strong game in goal for Orono. Scott Hartwig put Orono ahead 2-1 on a fine shot from in front of the Omemee net, banging in a pass from Cameron Esler. The Orono lead didn't last long as Omemee's No. 15 fought back with four goals in three minutes and fourty- one seconds to take a 5-2 lead. Orono's Dustin Reid assisted by Brent Gates and Ryan RQCk made it 5-3 with only J:424o play in the game. With the OftigtO: goalie on the bench for a sixtn attacker, Brent Gates scored assisted by Cameron Esler and Scott McAllister to make it 5-4 with only eight seconds to go in the game. Time ran out this time but "We'll get in next time." ' the Millbrook shooters. Thanks Mike, Keep us the good work. On Saturday, January 8th ' Omemee was in town for another of those titanic struggles struggles the two teamsjue famous for this year. The tost period went scoreless with both goalies coming up with some clutch saves. Then, early in the 2nd period Omemee grabbed, grabbed, a 1-0 lead only , to .have the Fuelers come roaring back , to tie with Anthony Webb completing a passing play started by Jason Brachvogel and Jason Major. As the second period drew to a close Omemee scored again to set the stage for a fast and furious finish. Anthony Webb, assisted by Todd Gray and Jason Burnham knotted the score at two early in the third, only to have Omemee jump back in front at the ' midway point. Not to be out done Anthony Webb got his hat trick a minute and a half later from Todd Gray and Blaine Souch. At this point I think the Fuelers felt the worst they could do .was gain a tie and with Omemee getting getting a penalty a win seemed quite possible. Orono No. 2 Tykes second league game was played against Newcastle at Orono on Sunday, January 9th. This game saw Orono squeeze a 2-0 victory over Newcastle.' The first period saw a lot of hard skating and good puck handling by both teams try- • Orono Juveniles undefeated in 2 Orono Juveniles travelled to Omemee where a shootout shootout resulted in a 8-8 tie. Orono scored its first goal in the first period. Steve Stec got the goal assisted by Scott Prescott. Orono had a strong second period scoring four goals. Orono scored two fast goals towards the middle of the third period and the final goal tied the game Scott Prescott unassisted, Steve Stec assisted by Paul Lane, and another unassisted goal by Scott Prescott tied the game at 8. Orono played Omemee a few days later this time getting getting the win 7-3. Orono got off to a good start scoring the first two goals of the game and then getting another one at the tWo second mark. Newcastle visited Orono where another hard fought game between these two teams resulted in a 3-3 tie. Orono scored two of their goals in the first period. Orono is! still undefeated agains|t Newcastle this yéar. I.O.O.F.PeeWees drop first of '83 The Orono I.O.O.F. Peewee's hosted Omemee on January 7th. This game resulted in Orono losing their first game of 1983 7-4. Omemee showed strength in the first period scoring 3 goals. They were scored by Marty Sauhders assisted by Jim Duggan, Bryan Brooks from Joe Wood and Jenny Suggitt and the third goal was scored by Marty Saunders assists going to Dave Meyer and Norm Winkler. , In the second Omemee's Marty Saunders scored again assisted by Jeff Banas. The next game for Orono No. 2 Tykes is in Manvers on Sunday, January 16th at 3:00 p.m. the night when Todd Thertell scored assists going to Trevor Bogdanow and T.R. Pollitt. Orono's Brent Stapleton then scored on a pass from Richard Bowmeester. Omemee opened the scoring scoring in (he third with yet another goal from Marty Saunders' assisted by Jenny Suggitt. Orono scored 2 more goals' in the third. Derek Zander from Goran Zager and Richard Bowmeester Unassisted. Omemee scored the last goal to make the final score 7-4. Marty Saunders scored his 5th goal of the game on a pass from Jim Duggan, , Better luck next time guys! Jade Gardens bottle Region police in 5-5 tie Orono Jade Gardens hosted Durham Regional Police op Sunday, Jan. 9th and bottled them to a 5-5 tie. The big scorer of the game was the Jade Garden's John Cartwright who collected 4 goals and an assist. The teams traded the lead throughout the game with Jade Gardens leading 2-0 and 3-2 before trailing 4-3 in the third period. Orono tied it at 4~4 i only to have the police go ahead 5-4. Jade Garden pulled pulled their goaltender with less than a minute to go in the game and with the extra at- 4 tacker Ray Melville scored to give the Jade Garden Seniors a 5-5 tie.
