Drama group has Broadway musical By: Elaine Barber What better way to beat the February "blahs" than to attend a performance of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." The Bowmanville Drama Workshop is producing this hit Broadway musical comedy comedy at the Bowmanville High School on February 9, 10, 11 and 12th at 8:15. f In all theatrical -«performances, -«performances, there has to be the right combination of ingredients ingredients and we think we've got them. For a musical you have to have musical talent and we have it galore. For a comedy, you have to have laughs, and there are hilarious moments from beginning to end. Some of the best moments of the show combine music and comedy. You'll never forget Judy Bagshaw as Domina singing the half tender-half furious love song about her husband, Senex, ho she suspects of "fooling arpund." Apd another highlight of the show is the entrance of John Crookshank, as the imperious imperious captain, Miles Gloriosus, who strides onto the stage and sings "Bring me my Bride." Another talented singer, Shelley Gray, plays Philia the young courtesan who can't read or do her numbers and has only been taught beauty and grace. In her song "I'm Lovely" she" admits that "lovely is the one thing (she) can do." Later, through a twist of fate and because of many complications complications of plot, Hysterium, played by Norm Smith, is convinced by Pseudolus, who is played by John Amesbury, to carry out the charade of pretending to be Philia. The echo of the song. "I'm Lovely", Lovely", as he tries to convince Hysterium, adds"the proper note of "off-beat" humour to this hilaribus scene. The music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim, who is presented in Bowmanville, February 9th through to the 12th. In this regard I was pleased to see that both City of Oshawa and the Town of Newcastle took advantage of the Employment Incentive Program. Through this budget initiative, the municipalities were provided with funds to create jobs for those in their communities on social assistance. Many worthwhile worthwhile projects involving repair and renovations to municipal property were undertaken as a result. Now the municipalities have a further opportunity to create work for the unemployed in their com- Books in big demand at Clarke Library 1982 was a bumper year as to circulation at the Clarke Public Library which operates under the umbrella of the Newcastle Library system. Circulation of books, cassettes and other materials increased by 35 percent from a 26,028 circulation in 1981 to 35,163 circulation in 1982. It was the largest percentage increase of the three libraries within the Town system during during the year. The overall library circulation circulation increase in the Town registered in at 12.6 percent. The Bowmanville Library circulation circulation increased from 122,561 in 1981 to 125,681 in 1982 and that in Newcastle Village increased from 23,017 to 28,384. In speaking with Mrs. Hadley, Clarke Librarian and Mrs. Schoen, Town Librarian, there appeared no real reason for the big increase increase in book circulation in Orono. Mrs. Schoen did state that it is a known fact that recessionary times, do stimulate reading. Mrs. : Hadley points out that music cassettes have become very popular and some of the increases increases at the Clarke branjeh could be in this areal Some 292 movie ,16 m. films land Video tapes are available through the local library system as well as the cassettes and books. one of Broadway's most talented song writers.
