Wednesday, February 9, 1983 Orono Tykes return to ice for rematch Champions in Sunderland Tournament On Feb. 5th both Orono Tyke Teams returned to the ice for a return match of the previous weeks game. Orono No. 2 again became the victors victors by a slim margin of 2-1 over Orono No. 1» The first period remained scoreless but it was not from lack of trying trying by both teams. The second second period gave Orono No. 2 the lead with an unassisted goal by Stephen Stadilman. Being down 1 goal Orono No. 1 turned on the power and tied the game with a goal by Chris ' Yeo assisted by Henry Kaldeway. Orono No. 1 player Michael Doty received received a penalty for interference, as 1 well as Orono No. 2 Michael Landers receiving a penalty for body contact. The third period gave Orono No. 2 the victory goal unassisted by Stephen Stadilman. Orono No. 1 pulled pulled out all the stops later in the 3rd period to try to even up the score. But Orono No. 2 continued to hold off the attackers attackers and keep the score unchanged. We commend Orono No. 2 goalie Timothy Hallowell and Orono No. 1 Goalie John Paul Tousignant. for doing some very good goal tending. Next game for Orono No. 2 is an exhibition game against Newcastle Novice in Orono on Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m. So come out and enjoy the entertainment and cheer the boys on. Manvers outscore Jade Gardens, 5-3 The Orono Roughley OMHA Novice hockey club were recent tournament tournament winners at a tournament tournament held in Sunderland. The local boys turned in a fine effort throughout the tournament and came home with the top trophy for the event. Teams members are: Scott Williams, Bradley Minnis, Dustin Reid, Craig Nemis. Kinsmen Bantams d owned by the Cobourg Sharpshooters in B series Orono Jade Gardens , travelled to Manvers to play the Manvers Oldtimers on Sunday, Feb. 6th and came opt on the short end of a 5-3 score. Manvers opened ub the scoring on a cheap goal that ,deflected off a skate. Orono fought back when Kerry Amott scored assisted by Éric Burton and Dave Shetler. Manvers went ahead on a controversial goal that never,crossed the goal fine. Manvers made it 3-1 and then went ahead 4-1 on another deflected goal off a skate. Jade Garden narrowed the score to 4-2 on a goal by A1 Hill assisted by Bruce Thertell and Jim Grey. Jade scored again to make it 4-3 on a goal by Ray Melville assisted Garth Webb and Jim Wood. Orono then got caught losing a face off in (heir own end and Manvers scored on a rebound to make the final score 5-3 Manvers. Kinsmen Bantams defeated Bobcaygeon 6-3. Bobcaygeon Kelly Nicholls opened the scoring 5:05 mark assisted by Troy Purdy. Robert Snoek scored, 4:47 assisted by Kevin Hartwig and Darren Dennis ' to tie. Troy Purdy for Bobcaygeon unassisted to take the lead. On Saturday Kinsmen Bantams Bantams travelled to Grafton for a tournament. The first game Orono met Cobourg's Canadian Canadian Tire being defeated 7-2. Russell Sullivan and Robert Snoek scoring Orono's goals with assists going to Mark Sprgent and Robert Snoek. This game put Orono on the running for the B. Championship. Championship. The second game Orono met Bewdley defeating them 8-4. Robert Snoek unassisted put Orono on tlfe board at 13:55. Then Bewdley scored two quick goals to take the lead. John Cowan assisted by Todd Mercer to tie at the end of the first period. Orono came out flying in the second scoring 4 quick goals. John Cowman assisted by Tim, Mercer apd Mike Lane 2 for Kevin Hartwig. Assists going to 2 Robert Snoek 1 and Darren Dennis and Mark Sargent. Steve Lycett assisted by Mike Lane and John Cowan. Bewdley scored two goals to end the second. Kevin Hartwig scoring scoring his 3 goals of the 1 game for a Hat Trick assisted by Mark Sargent. Todd Mercer assistée! by Steve Lycett and Mike Lane to end the game. Jeff Graham did a great job between thé pipés. On Sunday Orono met Baltimore Optimists defeating them 5-3. At the 10:22 mark Scott Irwin Irwin scored assisted by Mark Sargent and Robert Snoek. The Baltimore scored to tie the first period. Baltimore scored early in the second. Then Orono picked up momentum scoring 3 quick goals. Chris Richards assisted by Robert Snoek, Robert Snoek scoring two goals with assists going to Derek Anderson Anderson and Wayne Atkins. The third period saw lots of end to end action. Darren Dennis scored unassisted. Baltimore scored with just 6 seconds remaining. remaining. Orono met the Sharpshooters Sharpshooters from Cobourg for the B Championship. Cobourg scored the first goal at 13:18 mark. Mark Sargent tied up assisted by Robert Snoek. The second period remained remained scoreless. It was a hard checking game. Cobourg receiving 27 min. in penalties to Orono's 15 min. Cobourg scored late in the third to win the game. Orono fought hard but just couldn't get the puck in the net. A great team effort. They received silver medallions. Tennant Fuel Atom s crash Sunderland in play down round This week saw Orono Tennant Tennant Fuels Atoms open their round robin playoff with a win and a tie in a home and home series against Sunderland. On faed. Feb. 2nd we travelled to Sunderland in the rain and fog coming away with a 4-4 tie. The Fuelers efforts for the most part matched that of the weather which was rather dismal. Anthony Webb finally finally got the Fuelers on the board in the second period tieing the score after Sunderland had .taken a 1-0 1st period lead. Brian Rodd and Jason Major assisted. Kevin Roberts then scored the first of two goals in both instances helped out by Blaine Souch and Jason Burnham. Burnham. Kevin's last goal tied the score at 3-3 as Sunderland 1 scored two of their own. With one minute left in the game Blaine Souch scored what we hoped was the game winner from Anthony Webb and Jeff Hartwig. However, with six seconds left Sunderland scored to gain the tie. On Saturday night the Fuelers came out flying popping popping in two goals in the first minute and a half on route to a 15 to 1 victory. Everybody on the team figured in the scoring except Mike Good- murphy who was there with the sflbpper between the pipes when we needed him. For those who keep track the statistics were as follows; Brian Rodd 4 goals - 2 assists, Anthony Webb 3 goals - 6 assists, Todd Gray 2 goals -*3 assists, "David Sheridan 1 goal - 4 assists, Jason Burnham 1 goal 7 2 assists, Blaine Souçh, Brent Osmond and Kevin Roberts and Jason Brachvogel each had 1 goal and an assist. Jason Major Camsport Atoms tie in exhibition event Hamiltons Midgets take Bobcaygeon Camsport Atoms hosted Bowman ville for an exhibition exhibition game tieing 2-2.". • Steven Vanderschee scored unassisted at the 2:47 mark of the first. Orono opened the scoring m the first ' period whep Mike Hamel stole the puck at centre centre ice and raced in all alone, decked goalie Dave Taylor and slipped the puck by him. With only seven seconds left in the first period Ray Ripley picked up*a pass from his * defençe and ' slipped' it to Steve Clynes whofound Glyn Jenkins alone on left-wing letting letting him go in a|l alone to score OrOno's second goal. Robert French 'scored for Orono in the second with a' nice 'shot high to the corner on a pass from Mike Hamel and Steve Sawyer. Penalties played a big factor in the score as Orono again took 12 to.Bobcaygeon's 6. and Jeff Hartwig picked up two assists each. Bright and early on Sunday morning we played an exhibition exhibition game against the Oshawa Little NHL Cana- , dians. Kevin Roberts made his debut as a goalie and although he did a good job he proved that he is better putting putting the puck in the' net rather than keeping it out. Don't worry Mike your not about to lose your job. Despite out playing them for most of the game Oshawa trounced us 10 to 3. Todd Gray figured in all of the Tennant Fuels scoring 'picking up two goals and assisting on our third goal by Blaine Souch. Blaine picked up an assist on Todd's.second goal. Our next play off opponent opponent is Bobcaygeon starting t Tues. Feb. 8th at 7:00 p.m. in their arena. . * / . Bobcaygeon Bobcaygeon - spoiled Geoff Greens shutout with 8 min. left in, the third period when Orono's defence could not get .control of the puck in their end.
