Unique Alfred bog now threatened by drainage Woods, Water, and Wildlife By: Ron Reid - Federation of Ontario Naturalists Tucked away- in the far eastern corner of Ontario, among the dairy farms of Prescott County, lies a 9500 acre wetland known as Alfred Bog. As an island of peat in a sea of farmland, Alfred Bog is clearly unique. In fact, its' significance goes well beyond Ontario borders. It has the highest known density of moose in North America, even though the next moose herd is 200 km. away. One of its butterflies, the Bog Elfin, occurs at only three other spots on the continent. As an extensive raised bog of a kind rarely found in southern Ontario, Ontario, its wildlife and plants are often unusual, included the endangered Golden Eagle and two plants found nowhere else in the province. We might hope that such an important wetland would be protected, and until recently, it had been classed as a conservation zone by the local municipalities. But over the past 20 years, a company called Hardee Farms Intérria- tional had been quietly buying buying up bog land, often for as little as fifty cents an acre. Unfortunately, the company's motives extended beyond simply holding the land in its natural state, and' last fall it applied 1 for a change to an agricultural but Scôtt Williams and Dustin Reid. Jarret Prescott picked up this second playoff shut out as Orono won the game 4-0. Good work guys. Keep it up next week. either drainage for farmland or mining for peat to be the likely alternative. In either case, much'of the significance of the Bog would be lost. Alfred 'Bog's uncertain future is a classic example of the threats- 'facing other - wetlands across Southern Ontario. Ontario. Yet' the Ministry' of Natural Resources, whose officials officials are putting the final touches on a new wetlands protection policy, are shirking shirking any direct role in saving the Bog. The battle to keep protective zoning has been taken up by a local group, the Vankleek Hill Nature Society, Society, but their pleas for assistance from the provincial Ministry have gone without response. , The fate of Alfred Bog will likely be decided this spring at an Ontario Municipal Board hearing. Conservation groups from Ottawa, Montreal, Montreal, and Toronto, including the FON, have pledged to support the local dub in its defence. But will the government government agency responsible for wetlands protection make its voice heard?
