In speaking with Mr. Rick Essex last week he points out- that .such a program as 'offered 'offered through an Alternate School System is now under consideration and at fhe point that he is now endeavouring to determine the possible clientele and . numbers who would be* interested interested in such a school: RICK ESSEX Essex stated that the Alternate Alternate School System has been most successful in Lanark, Sudbury and Cornwall. Cornwall Cornwall has a student enrolment of 4,500 and operates out of two portable classrooms. Essex' points out that the trnate School would enrol those who have left school for one reason or another and as well accept adults who were seeking and interested in upgrading their education. In pointing to advantages of the Alternate School he said .there was a'great deal of flexibility flexibility as to attendance and'as to , enrolment. "You can enrol at anytime during the year," he said, "and in most cases ytiu cap pick the time of day or what days you intend to attend." He said this was not possible in such as Clarke High School. Essex said there would be three # areas of study including academic, Co-op and Life Skill courses. The academic course would be through correspondence correspondence courses but provided provided through Clarke High School and those enrolled would.come to the Alternate - School for tutorial help and as well would write their exams exams at the school and have their papers marked by the school. The school would give individual help to the student and the student would set thei.r time table to suit their schedules. A Co-qp course would be arranged through Clarke High School and the academic component to the co-op programs would be available at the Alternate School providing credits were sought. Essex said there was a - wide range of openings for skills in this course. The Life Skills course would assist with job search, (Continued page 2) • The Orono «Downtown Businessmen's Association held their regular monthly meeting last week and, have planned a Downtown promotion promotion for the week-end of M'arch 17th «through, March 19th. The «promotion is to coincide with a Spring Art and Craft Show and Sale to be held, in the Orono Town Hall on the same week-end. The Art and Craft show and sale is being held March 19th arid 20th. The local DBIA is asking local businessmen to participate participate by offering coupon specials for the week-end. , The Association is providing $200.00 in redeemable coupons during the same week»-end and* will be distributed through the various retail outlets to be .!
