Recollections open at McLaughlin Gallery Isabel McLaughlin: Recollections opens at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, Tuesday, March 1, 1983. Ninety-eight oils, watercolours watercolours and drawings show the scope of McLaughlin's work over the past fifty years. This major overview includes includes studies of nature, architecture architecture and the figure. Her interest in nature was encouraged encouraged by both her mother and grandmother from childhood. While she received received high marks in High School for her botanical drawings, her first art instruction was in Paris where she attended , school from 1921 to 1924. In 1925 McLaughlin attended the Ontario College of Art where the assistant principal, Arthur Lismer, advanced her to the second year class. Design was McLaughlin's strongest interest. In' Bob- caygeon 1928, one of her first oils, her inclination towards pattern is apparent in the view of houses and shacks. Other canvases show the influence influence of Lauren Harris and the Group of Seven, although her design sense •» rapidly evolved toward, but not into' abstraction. , McLaughlin was one of the important early modernists in Canada. Everyone is invited to meet Miss McLaughlin while her exhibit is on view in Oshawa. Receptions and tea will be held on the Sundays of March 6th, 20th and 27th, from 3 t'o 5 p.m..
