Get Ready for Spring by Van Belle Get Ready tor Spring One of the first things that are done outside into the garden is to prune all your ' fruit trees.' Now is the time to get them done before the sap starts to come up. This will give the fresh cuts time to heal over and will stop any bleeding which could be caused caused by the sap coming up. Most branches do not have to be covered with a tree wound healing compound except the ones that are larger than 2 in. Make sure that you have a clean cut and thfn paste this tree wound dressing over the wounded area, this will also keep the insects from going into the woody part. Branches Branches that are going straight up should be cut on a slant so that the water will not lay there. In almost all cases too much is left on the tree and too little is cut off. The first thing to keep in mind that thé only reason that you have fruit trees is to produce fruit, although a secondary use is the beauty and shade that you get from t)ie tree. To produce'the best fruit possible, possible, it requires as much light as possible, with as much air circulation' throughout the treç 'so the tree must be as open as possible with the sun shining on the fruit where ever possible.,The easiest way is to prune the tree in the form of a Christmas tree with on.e main leader injhe centre, and then 4 leaders coming out from the main trunks. Then all the other'branches must come from these leaders. This is of course not 'always possible possible since the tjee may already be too old or, the branches are already formed in such a way • that to prune them to this system you would have to remove too much. Still the Christmas tree form can be used even if it will take more than one year. Never round off a fruit-tree since the bottom bottom half will never get any direct sunlight and the fruit on this part will never colour properly. The so called suckers or branches that are going straight up should mostly be cut off or at least shortened so that they produce produce small branches or spurs where fruit will grow. Anytime now you can apply apply the first spray of the season which is called the dormant spray and as the words indicate indicate it should be applied when the tree is dormant. It will serve two purposes. First of all it will clean up any overwintering fungi such as black spots and scale. The product for this purpose is called a lime sulphur formulation. formulation. Etc sure to spray the ground around the tree with this spray. The second part of this spray combination combination is for cleaning up any . overwintering insects that are in a dormant»- stage right on the trunk of the tree and in the underside of the bark. This product is an oil which will cover the insects and literally smothers them. Be sure to cover as much of the, branches branches as possible. The nicest part of these sprays is that they come packaged together- so that with one application you can do the whole job. The main reason that the two are not • mixed together is that the oil would float on the top and that they will not stay mixed together. Make sure to shake the solution if you have left it standing for a little while. Dorman sprays are available now from your favourite garden centre. Until next week, Happy Gardening. Gardening.
