WOODS, WATER AND WILDLIFE By: Ron Reid - Federation of Ontario Naturalists Most Canadians like to feel that our reputation in other countries is a favourable one, in that we are seen as a responsible, progressive country. Unfortunately, our stance on international wildlife issues is doing much to earn us a well-deserved black eye. Our major public, relations problem, of course, is the seal hunt. But Canada has also drawn fire for its refusal to help end the hunting or whales over ' the last few years. Now we are playihg on equally backward role in Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES. CITES is designed to help save endangered wildlife by stopping trade in the commercial commercial products derived from these threatened species. The Convention can be used to control traffic in ivory, for example, or endangered endangered parrots for pet, , trade, or exotic furs from species such as ocelot. Such trade is big business - a typical year in West Germany, Germany, for example, sees $50 million of wildlife imports. Two years ago, the Canadian Canadian government introduced a resolution of the CITES meeting that would have led to massive de-listing of protected protected species. Even though that resolution failed to pass, Hunting permitted at Orono Tree Nursery In a recent report to the Town of Newcastle council by the clerk it was pointed out that hunting under licence is permissbale on Crown Lands. The report came to council as a result of a letter to council council containing complaints of hunting on lands of the Orono Tree Nursery. The letter letter by Mrs. Catherine, Sampson Sampson of R.R. 2 Orono complained complained that hunters in the area were a threat in an area which was used for walking and horse riding. As the Orono Tree Nursery lands are Crown Lands hunting hunting is permitted by those carrying carrying a proper hunting licence. Some years ago the property property was posted against hunting hunting but this was removed allowing hunting to take place on the property. It has been reported there has been no incidents due to hunting even for workers in the fields at the nursery and that hunting Allowed is only for shotguns. . It was recommended at council that, the plant of pheasants in the fall 'on Nursery lands be discon- tinued. J ' Mayor Rickard pointed out at the meeting that owners of private lands must give permission permission for hunting on thtir 1 property. another Canadian proposal did lead to a down-grading of protection for the North American gyrfalcon. This year, Canada is getting a similar treacherous pattern. Our representatives will oppose oppose any ban on trade in whale products, or any regulations on trade in seal furs. On your behalf, they are also proposing that timber wolves, grizzly bears, river otters, lynx, bobcats, and bighorn sheep be removed from the protection of international international controls. Some of Canada's objections objections are based on a conflict with our fur industry. Many, however, arise from our government's philosophy that where scientific data is sparse, a species should' not be listed for protection. By failing to err on the side of safety, the Canadian government government is playing the politics of extinction. Environment Minister John Roberts, who, has responsibility for CITES, should be ashamed of his role in furthering the decline of the. world's threatened wildlife. Beaver and Otter Season ends March 31st The trapping season for beaver and otter in the Lindsay Lindsay District closes on March 31, 1983. All pelts must be presented at the Lindsay District Office of the Ministry of Natural Resources for sealing, by April IQ, 1983. Fur sales this year have produced an average price of $25 for beaver and $74 for otter. otter. In line with present economic conditions fur prices have generally been 15 to 20 percent lower than prices paid in recent years. * WORK WANTED D&R Custom Fencing and custom chain-sawing, 983-9627 01623-7353 Orono, Ont.
