From Around the Region May Seek Tory Leadership . , Allan Lawrence, MP for Durham- Northumbcrland has stated that he may seek the leadership of the Conservative Party Party but will first wait to see who is running. Lawrence' has stated thÿ party should remain just right of centre and this could be a reason for him to join the race. Lawrence, 57, was a close contender for the leadership of the Ontario Tory Party Party when he lost by only 44 votes to Bill Davis. Pay Increases Five* Percent Some 80 public health nurses in Durham have agreed to a pay increase of five percent. The nurses are employed by the Durham Health Unit. Heather Clements, spokesman for the nurses, said they will be seeking more in 1984 so that public health nurses coiild have parity with those nurses working at hospitals. It was claimed public health, nurses are now below the starting salaries paid at hospitals. Convocation Speaker Ken Taylor, Canadian Ambassador in New York and who gained fame* for hiding six Americans in the Canadian Embassy Embassy in Iran in 1980-81, will be the guest speaker at the Durham College convocation to be held on May 28th. The College expects some 900 graduates at the Convocation this May. Liquor Warehouse The Ontario Liquor Control Board liquor warehouse being built in Whitby is well underway with the first building now being, closed in. The two buildings are on a 52 acre site and will cover a space of 600,000 square feet when completed. The warehouse is expected to be operational in mid 1984. The storage building, which is about one-quarter completed at the present time will house 3.6 million cases of liquor. Employment Boost It has been reported that Sam Cureatz, M.P.P. Durham East, will press Ontario , . treasurer Frank Miller for funding that can be applied to stimulate employment in the province. Cureatz states employment must be a major concern of the government and the spring budget. Cureatz is to ask the treasurer not to cut back on funding for education and hospitals. Still Negotiating Negotiations are still underway between Goodyear Canada and its 250 employees. The Union will be in a legal position to strike in late April. The key issue in negotiations is a request by Goodyear Canada to have the option of implementing a seven-day work week at its plant in Bowman ville. The plant now operates three shifts, five days a week. A Two-Way Street Local unemployed in the Oshawa area may find it difficult to obtain jobs at the Oshawa GM plant due to the fact that unemployed GM workers from other areas are how applying for the jobs to open the second shift at the GM truck assembly plant. The number of workers from other areas including London, Windsor, St. Catherines, St. Theresç and St. Eustache are expected to reach upwards of 550. Some workers at GM who were laid off in 1967 and 1968 moved to othér locations for work at GM plants and now are returning returning to Oshawa, Stressful Situation Overcrowding of inmates at the Whitby Jail and an increased workload for staff and jailers has created a stressful situation states the president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Uniqp. The jail built in 1957 was to accomodate just over 60 inmates. The inmate population population has risen to 120 and now is peaking at 155. Other correctional institutions which may relieve the load from Whitby are said to be in the same position as Whitby and not in a position to accept révérais from Whitby. Second Thoughts General Motors of Canada is now having second thoughts of changing one of its lines in Oshawa to build mid-size cars. Falling worls oil prices is now thought to make the larger passenger car more desireable which is already showing up in sales in the United States. GM had planned to move the production of the Impala, Caprice and Parisienne models to the United States while producing producing thé smaller Pontiac 6000 and Oldsmobile Cutlass Cicre lines in Oshawa. The change over was to start in early August at a cost of $150 million. The final decision has yet to be made. New Yorker Selling The Chrysler Canada trim plant in Ajax is now almost ' back to normal as to employment and Chrysler continues to hold the second place in the automotive industry above third place Ford. The New Yorker line continues to sell well and Chrysler passenger car sales in February of 1983 surged ahead by 6.7 percent percent over that of February 1982. Truck sales did drop 19.8 percent in the same month. City Sewer Fix The Region of Durham have now given approval for the expenditure of $1.5 million this year for sewer work in Oshawa to relieve basement flooding.
