Canadian UAW director Bob White has vowed his opposition to the Canadian cruise test even though some members of A the union do make parts for the missile. $60,000 Drug Bust LSD with a street value of from $45,000 to $60,000 was seized at a Pickering Shopping Shopping Mall when Regional Police were making a routine check of cars at the Mall. When two officers stopped the car, an occupant leaped out and began to run away while at the same time throwing away a bag he was carrying. The bag was found to centaine 15,000 hits of LSD. A Surplus of Beds The Durham Region government funded old age homes having a large number of vacant vacant beds with Hillsdale having 25 and Fair- view having 22. The empty beds are for residents who can take care of themselves. The decline is thought to have happened due to construction of senior citizens apartments apartments in the Region which tend to keep seniors out of the homes longer. The Region does have a waiting list of some 400 seniors wanting accommodation but one-third of these do need nursing care. Others on the list have apparently applied prior to any need. Orono European Skating Tour Barbara Underhill, Oshawa and Paul Martini of Woodbridge who recently won a bronze medal for pairs skating in the world's figure skating competitions were honoured to remain in Europe to take part in the International Skating Union's 15-city European tour. The Canadian Figure Skating team which competed in Finland a couple of weeks ago ran up the best record for Canada in over eighteen years. Underhill and Martini have performed at the Orono Arena at the annual skating carnival carnival which has yet to be held this year. Program Popular A program sponsored by the District Health Council and the Regional Health Unit is proving most popular with women and registration has already numbered 85. The two groups had originally thought Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 23, 1983 - 7 they would be lucky if they had a registration registration of some seventy-five. The program involves women and their health and will be held through a series of workshops given by Dr. Pam McDermott of Oshawa. Student Business Loans The Ontario YouthSecretariat does provide provide interest-free loans of up to $2,000 for students to operate summer businesses. The loans are available to students, 15 years and older and who intend to return to school in the fall. With summer jobs decreasing students in increasing numbers are now going into business for themselves during the summer months and in the majority of cases are making a success of their ventures. Approves Orono rezoning application Harare pleased with meeting with Frank Drea at Queens Park The Ueneral Purpose Committee of the Town of Newcastle gave their approval approval to a rezoning application application on Monday by Mrs. Yvonne Trafford. . The rezoning will allow the sale of crafts from a room in the home located on Rowe Street at Church Street in the Village of Orono. A staff report stated there was no objection to the application application and it was not felt that parking should be a problem problem due to the nature of the retail outlet. Diane Harare, chairman of the Region of Durham Social Services, along with Regional Chairman, Chairman, Gary Herrema and Durham East M.P.P., Sam Cureatz, met last Friday with the Minister of Community and Social Services, Frank Drea, for an informal discussion discussion of social services as they related to the Region of Durham and throughout the Province. Harare states she had re- 1 quested the meeting as a result of correspondence from the Minister asking social service department to contain their increases within the provincial guidelines of five percent. A further concern concern has been the lack of communication prior to increases increases being instituted by the province for welfare payments. Harare said the Region* has been caught in mid-term without funds available as the budget has been established early in the year. In the matter of the five percent restraint program correspondence the group from the Region were informed informed that although the letter letter had been sent out to all social service depart npnts in Ontario the province would honour its legislated responsibility. responsibility. Harare said they were told the province wanted them to do all in their power to keep costs down but the Ministry is well aware of the problems facing social service programs. " Harare also said the Minister assured the group that in the future legislated increases in payments and services would be brought out at the first of the year so adjustments adjustments could be made and funding provided in the annual annual budget process. Gounc. Harare stated this will now assist with financial planning within the Social Services department and the Region of Durham. The local councülor stated, there had been a rapid growth in social services over the past number of years but it now appears to have levelled off wtüch should give some time to evaluate what has been done and what the future holds. She said improved communications with the province could well improve social services in the Region. In speaking of vacant beds now appearing in the Homes for the Aged she said this was due to new services which have come on stream such as Community Care, Meals on Wheels and the increased 1 availability of senior citizens apartments. These services #_are all important and encourage encourage seniors to stay in their homes longer. She said 1 because of these services vacancies' were now appearing appearing in the Homes for the Aged Aged for those not needing nursing nursing care. However there is now a greater need for Extended : Care beds and that Ambulatory Ambulatory beds which are now vacant may be directed to Extended Extended care.
