Ask status of Info, committee v°' <<x The Town of Newcastle council has supported a motion motion by Councs. Hamre and Barr.that the Town enquire of the Ministry of the Environment Environment the status of a proposed proposed Information Committee Committee for the Hale Landfill site., Counc. Hamre pointed out that the provincial ministry had recommended the committee committee late last year and in December had asked the Flower Den 28 David's Crescent Dried & Silk Floral Arrangements CUSTOM MADÈ 983-5423 . • Town to appoint two members to the committee. She said the Town made the two appointments but nothing has been heard from the Ministry. Mayor Rickard said the Town had agreed to appointing appointing two committee members from council and the purpose of the committee was to monitor the landfill site. It was pointed out at the meeting that Hale's, the Clarke Committee of Concerned Concerned Citizens, the Region of Durham, Sam Cureatz and the Town were to be represented on the Information Information Committee. Counc. Hamre said some interestèd people were now asking what had happened as to the formation of the committee. committee. The request to the Ministry was passed with little discussion. discussion. i|i1|L im m» jfiMi ivj I was glad to see in the Globe and Mail recently that under the presidency of Pierre Juneau, the CBC shows signs of coming to its senses. There is some reason to believe that the fragmentation of the television audience audience brought about by cable, satellites and the Pay TV phenomena may have the effect, at long last, of freeing the CBC from its quest, for a mass audience, and enabling it to replace quantity with quality as a network network hallmark. When the CBC began in television thirty thirty years ago, and it was the only television signal in most parts of the country, the brass at the mother corporation corporation told themselves, that they had a responsibility for balanced programming, that is a little something for everyone. If it was true then, it was much less true fifteen fifteen years later, and by now has become nonsense. In 1983, there is no reason at all for the CBC to carry DALLAS beyond the fact that it needs the money. My only quarrel with Mr, Juneau is that he still believes he needs at least some revenue from advertising and that he believes the network should go to about 80 per cent Canadian content as opposed to about 70 per cent Mow. If I may speak for a moment as a viewer, rather thân a producer of Canadian programming, I would be happier with no advertising at ali on a network for which I help stump up some $820 million dollars annually. annually. And I would be happy if the Canadian content stayed at about 70 per cent, or even lower, and the CBC relied on more quality foreign programming to fill up its prime time schedule. My wife fnd I watched TV Ontario Ontario for a couple of prime hours-the other night; for* a one hour program on the Canadian painter, David Milne, and two half hours on balldt. Ttje Milne program was produced for the CBC and TV Ontario jointly by an independent producer. And one of the half hours on ballet was produced by CKND Winnipeg, a Global affiliate. affiliate. I don't know when the Milne program played on the CBC, but you can bet your boots it wasn't opposite THE LOVE BOAT or anything like that. And the CKND special bn Pugh and Glasco and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet probably won't be played on this network at all. That's too bad, in my view, in both cases but I have to accept the fact that it's part ot the current Canadian Canadian reality. The struggle for the diminishing mass audience audience has become all-consuming, in the public and private networks alike. The CBC's main concern now should not be balanced programming for the mass audience, audience, but quality programming for the large parts of Canada which can't get either a TV Ontario or one of the PBS border stations. That is the constituency that is starving. And it's not just quality Canadian programming programming that a lot of us hunger for. Why, when collective 1 ly we give the CBC nearly a billion dollars a year, should we as individuals, have to pay 15 bucks, a month for the privilege of watching NICHOLAS NICKLEBY on C CHANNEL? I have high hopes that with Pierre Juneau, the CBC will at least acknowledge the fact that the question is a reasonable one. by Roy Forrester We fee! there has been some interesting events around home and at the office over the past week over which some excitement excitement has been aroused in one form or another. Since the PC convention convention held in Winnipeg, earlier this year, we have read with interest the developments in the PC leadership race. Never did we believe under any circumstance circumstance would we become involved. But the unpredictable is always interesting interesting and through recent recent events at the office we are lining up with Peter Blaikie. Now Blaikie did speak at a PC meeting in Orono some two years ago when he was seeking the president's president's chair for the National National PC organization. To say the least he left a good impression and at the time he would have received our vote, if such we had one. Early last week we were visited by Dik Zanders of the Kendal area asking if we would be interested in doing some printing for Peter Blaikie. Dik explained he had been appointed National Director of Media and Public Relations arid had in fact earned the appointment appointment through a presentation presentation to the Blaikie campaign campaign committee. We were left with an order of 20,000 letterheads letterheads to print in three colours, gold, blue and green. The order has now been completed and delivered and within a few weeks will; be distributed throughout Canada in pursuit of support for the Blaikie campaign. • Dik is hot on the campaign campaign trail these days and dropped into the office only Tuesday on his way to meet the publishers of various newspapers to line up interviews and what have you. Our interest has certainly certainly been wetted as far as the PC Leadership race is now concerned and of course we wish Peter every success. success. Fennell's firm Financial Report ORONO AND ARENA COMMUNITY CENTRE STATEMENT OF RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURES FOR THE YEAR 1982 FINALLY MADE IT For some time Donna and I have been intending to visit the Marigold Dinner Dinner Playhouse in Whitby and finally got off our butts last Sunday to make to trip following making Sunday afternoon reservations. reservations. It was a thoroughly enjoyable enjoyable and comfortable outing and one which we intend to duplicate in the near future when the Marriage-Go-Round hits the Marigold stage from April 27th to June 18th. Morris the chef does excel excel in his offerings for his four-course dinners with all the trimmings. It is a relaxing atmosphere and one which I was ready to enjoy. Incidentally the Village Bakeshop, Orono, was well represented with some of their delicacies, at the dessert buffet. Plaza Suite with Larry Solway. and Nuala Fit- Gerald starring was a continuation of the entertaining entertaining evening and the lively rendition brought many a chuckle and laughter. We especially enjoy the third scene and the two stars played' it well. Dinner theatre is a relaxing night out and this . certainly was the case on Sunday, it also affords the opportunity to speak.with the performer's and following the Sunday night performance we did take this opportunity to sip on coffee and a scotch and speak with Nuala and Larry; It was interesting that Larry made mention of the old flax mill in Orono and what an ideal building for a theatre. He feels it does have the character from the outside and does have a free span roof which is something one would look for ih creating a new theatre, Solway did express con- sderable interest in the building. He also made mention of the Orono downtown area and although lacking in architectural architectural theme did have an effect of making an impression. impression. He said th,ere are few such centres left today. today. So all in all it has been a good week, well living for to be' ready for the next.
