2-Orono Weekly Times. Wednesday. Mav 4. 1983 rotio 8Eeefelp Stmes Another Landmark To Disappear | . ' Newcastle council is now well embarked to com- | plete plans for a new fire hall in the Village^f Orono. Design plans are to be drafted for council approval and then taken to tendering. . The fate of the present fire hall is still up in the 3, b as was stated last Monday at council meeting. Counc. Hubbard did say she had some concerns as to possible demolition of the building as it could seriously affect the streetscape,of downtown Orono. The point is well taken for the building does fit in with the rest of the adjacent buildings and is part of the character of downtown Orono. The demolition of the fire hall would seriously affect streetscape. Orono will never be a modern looking shopping centre in the downtown area but with one exception it does have a character of its own, pleasing, comfortable and well kept. We have always thought that the present hall could have been restored to a condition that would have been adequate to house a fire department rather than having to build a new.building and placing it in a residential area north on Main Street. This in itself is soméwhat disrupting and one may well question the planning ethics. If the Oropo Fire Hall is beyond repair then so is the case with many other buildings on fylàin Street but they have been maintained and continue to serve their purpose quite adequately. Restoration could have been a lot less costly and with some imagination the Orono Fire Hall could have been unique in character as well as serviceable. Needless to say the ability of the fire department is not in the building that houses the equipment but rather in the expertise of the firefighters themselves when they arrive at the fire. The local firefighters were commended for their expertise at a recent fire in the north end of Orono. Will the new building make any difference? As we understand and from a report to the Town committee on Monday the new hall is to be less elaborate than the Courtice Hall and.of cement block construction. Surely it should conform or surpass residential developement in the area in which it is to be placed. Jo say the present hall is ready to fall down is nonsense and we feel that a greater attempt could have been made to continue with the use of the building through thoughtful restoration, as is carried out in many downtown areas, and at a cost that could have been somewhat less than the purchase of new property and construction of a new hall. Marie Hubbard left the meeting stating she had had enough. In the staff report to the committee on Monday it was pojnted out that the fire chief, deputy and administrator administrator had met to discuss the Orono Fire Hall project which has been included included in the 1983 budget for construction this year. Staff recommended the engineering firm, of Totten, Sjms, Hubicki and that the project be undertaken this year. The report also recommended recommended the setting up of a technical committee of staff members. It was reported that the Orono Station would be less elaborate than the Courtice Hall and as construction could start in the'spring completion completion time should be less than the six months taken for the Courtice Hall. The new. hall is proposed to be constructed in the north of the Village on th,e west side of Mill Street, north of Millson Hill on property purchased last year. Counc. Hubbard said she was concerned over the change in the Orono streetscape if the present fire hall was demolished. She was assured by Don Smith that this matter would be discussed discussed by council before any such action was undertaken. Mayor Rickard referred to a meeting held on Friday at which time other alternatives, he said, had been considered. He pointed out that the fire chief had not been present and wondered as to his remarks as to the considerations considerations at that time. Fire Chief Hayman said he had no knowledge of the meeting or discussion. Don Smith took the blame for the fire chief having no knowledge of the meeting but that Smith was of the opinion that he would have been notified. The chief administrator said there were other ways to go and that council could call for submissions and test the market. ' Counc. Cowman said she would support calling for other proposals whije Mayor Rigkard said he waS satisfied with the wa'y council was now proceeding. 1 Gouijc.
