Lawrence opposes recent fed. budget The April 19th federal budget is a worst possible compromise at a time when Canadians are desperately seeking jobs. Finance Minister Marc Lalonde faced two opposing pressures -- either to vastly expand government spending on job-creation projects, or else to cut back government expenditures and the deficit so the public would spend more and lift the economy. Unfortunately, the Minister incorporated the worst of both concepts. His budget offers no significant aid to reduce unemployment. And government spending and taxes will go up 14 per cent - and the deficit will rise to a staggering $31.3 billion by the end of this year. Taxpayers should recognize that out of every $3. they pay in federal taxes, $1. must be used to cover the cost of interest and carrying " charges on this huge deficit. That is a deplorable waste of our financial resources. When looking at the size of this deficit, we must remember how the Finance Minister increased it by another $200 million of your tax money at the very last moment, simply to cover up his own inept leak of budget figures to the news media on Monday. So much for the deep researtih we were told was going into this budget. Obviously this $200 million increase, at the expanse of the taxpayers and the economy, was picked desperately from th'in air by Mr. Lalonde just to protect his own reputation. reputation. Even more disturbing is the long-term impact of this swollen deficit. It will remain at a record 25 to 30 billion dollar level for the next six years. 'Obviously this hangover from Liberal mismanagement must seriously hamper a new Progressive Conservative government when it assumes responsibility for restoring the financial affairs of Canady.
