Bunting Tree Improvement Centre Clarke High School welcomes Pitman The History Department of Clarke High School was pleased to welcome -Mr. Walter Pitman, noted educator, historian, former member of parliament and present Executive Director of the Ontario Arts Council, as guest speaker on April 27th. Mr. Pitman spoke to the student body on the topic, "Is there value in a liberal arts education?" He raised such questions as, what type of lifestyle will Canadians have in a post industrial, high tech society? How will cur- rent concern for conservation and environment change social values? He suggested that what one does with his or her life will be more important important than what one possesses and that those with a liberal arts education will find greater satisfaction in life than those without. Grade XIII and Grade V History students later met with Mr. Pitman who discussed whether or not Canada has developed a unique unique cultural identity. The forces which, work against the development pf such an iden- tity: regionalism, multiculturalism, colonial mentality and the powerful cultural influence of the United States were explained. explained. Friday evening Bob Burger, assistant deputy minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources, announced announced that the Ministry had declared that the complex at the Orono Tree Nursery was to be known as the W.R. Bunting Tree Improvement Centre in recognition recognition of the work undertaken by Bill Bunting through his years with the Ministry. It was in Orono that the first full-scale trial program program was undertaken in vegetative propagation of black spruce. The competition was held on April 9th, to test the financial skills members had learned in their club. Over 90 members took part in the day, which included quizzes, social recreation and presentations on financial management. Local members who took part in the day were: Joyce Bruinsma, Irene Payer, Marilyn Green, Robert Green, Elizabeth Luke, Paul Green, Anne-Marie Hooge- veen, Natalie Koczulab, Lynn McLaughlin, Todd Or- miston, Brian Van Camp, Debbie Van Camp, and Lisa Van Hemman. Robert Green, from Blacksfock, won the Top County Award for the day; presented by,the Farm Credit Corporation. The Top 3 competitors for the day, who won $150, $100, and $50 respectively in silver wafers, were: Graham Dyer, Victoria, First; Chuck Fiss, Durham West, Second; and tied for third were Anne & Janet Lamb, from Durham West. There are six other'similar competitions to be held across the province and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture & Food will be awarding the 5 members,with 1 the highest s,cores a scholarship scholarship of $350 for continuing their education.
