2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May II, 1983 Second Class Mail Registration Number 00036B Published Every Wednesday at the office of PuMication Main Street, Orono Roy C. Ftojrestër, Editor TIME TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK With Conservation areas throughout i the Province Province on Ontario including the Ganaraska Region Conservation Conservation Area now finalizing watershed plans it is an opportunity for municipal councils and citizens to take a look at the programs to be undertaken in the interest of the natural world over the next five to twenty years. It is a requirement of the Ministry of Natural Resources that such plans be submitted in June of 1983 and to this end the Ganaraska has presented an interim report to the Town of Newcastle council for their approval. approval. It had been intended that the general public would have an opportunity to havç some input to the plan but this has not been the case in the local area. Ontario municipalities through their own organization, Association of Municipalities in Ontario, have had over the years many concerns as to the operation operation of Conservation Authorities and have asked for change with little result. Many of the AMO objections have been legitimate but which could be easily offset with concerned and energetic plans of the Authorities. Surely we must strive to leave as much of the natural world in tact for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations. Lack of concern and initiative will only prove destructive and this does showup all around us. Citizens and the municipality do have the opportunity opportunity through their municipalities to ask for better as to those things relating to conservation and the environment environment and the natural world about us. With watershed planning the door surely should be open for that opportunity even though the public, to this point, has not been encouraged to participate in this particular area. Conservation Authorities were warned five yeafs ago that Watershed plans would in the near future be a requirement of the Ministry from thé Authorities. To this end the Ganaraska did embark on compiling information information for such a plan for the Wilmot and Graham Creek but which seems to have been set-aside some years ago and never completed. Of course the heat is on now and a completion date of June 15th has been set by the Ministry. x It It .seems reasonable to ask the Town of Newcas tle to withhold approval until such time as they are satisfied with conservation plans of a specific nature for the future. It will be a long time before they get another opportunity such as exists tpday. ORONO WEED CONTROL , GOVERNMENT LICENSED - LAWN SPRAYING - WEEDS INSECTS - FERTILIZING (CIL) DRIVEWAY SEALING Work Completed By Licensed Professional • FREE ESTIMATES PHONE BOB 983-5267 » BOX 277, ORONO Letter to Editor To the Editor; Thursday, April 28th, I represented Orono-Lockhart kindergarten parents ai the special, school board meeting in Cobourg. The parents showed their disapproval of 1 the proposal to discontinue noon busing of kindergarten children and the alternate full-day kindergarten system, which would probably result. For those who are not 1 familiar with the alternate full-day kindergarten system, this would mean children would go to school all day Monday, Wednesday . and Friday one week and then Tuesday and Thursday the next., This means very long days for some 4'A and 5 year olds, who may get on the bus before 8 a.m. and not return home until after 4 p.m. 1 would like to thank parents for (heir support-and also the members of the school board, who voted against the proposal. I feel however, that this is only a temporary solution and the issue will come- up again -soon ! f 1 would like to- express a fewMdeas that have been suggested suggested to me as a result of the meeting Thursday night. First, it was mentioned that the school board has to pay 7% sales lax on their supplies. supplies. I would like to know exactly what amount this involves. involves. This may be one area we, as parents and indeed all taxpayers could help our local school board! Apparently, Apparently, the school board has already requested that they be exempted from paying paying the provincial lax. Now it's our turn! 1 suggest that everyone write his M.P.P. expressing expressing the need for at least a decrease in the amount paid as tax. I realize that a large portion of the budget goes to pay salaries, but a substantial portion goes for supplies and purchases. Another issue where our opinion might help is in the transportation involved in Co-op Education programs. It has been suggested by one of our Trustees that part of the approximate $30,000 could be paid by the employer and the students involved. involved. Many people are not aware that the total amount is paid by our local school board. 1 believe this is a very important part of education. Why doesn't the provincial government lend a hand? Ask your local M.P.P, Another opinion expressed Thursday night was that the expense of transportation for field trips and special programs, programs, such as the swimming program where children are bused lo Bowmanville, be paid by the parents. 1 believe this is a fair idea, however, 1 would like to add a suggestion. suggestion. With the high unemployment, some parents cannot afford the added expense. expense. 1 have not had time to inquire, but I suspect that some of the local service clubs may be willing to help out financially. Most teachers know where the greatest néeds are, so in this way, no child , would miss these valuable programs. My last statement 1 have left to the last because 1 feel it is what most parents are interested interested in - that being the effects of all-day ' kingergarten on our children! .. The following questions must 'also be answered: What exactly exactly is going to happen to " our children? Of what would the curriculum consist? What are the long range effects? Are there more discipline problems 2 or 3 years later? r Are we going to have an increase increase in special education costs because children are not coping? It has disturbed many, many parents that a number of board members would have voted for the proposal, not knowing the Social, emotional emotional and economic cost implications, implications, only believing there might be some obvious monetary savings. People want to know now much it is going to cost to implement implement the proposals. Would the board actually be saving money or would the suggestion that it. was going to cost more be a valid one? „ These are only a few of the questions asked, and we would like some proven facts and figures. • 1 It was carried at this meeting, that a committee consisting of board members, administration, "teachers and Kendal News Joy in Living Have you ever watched thë sunrise On a lovely morn in spring? ' • , My neighbour's working up a storm and looking all run down and worn; since early spring without a stop, he's slaved till you would think he'd drop. He's up before the rooster's crow and all day long he's on the go; and even if the weather's bad, he can not rest because he's mad. His place locfks wonder ful it's true,"and still he s.a there's more to do; h<~ pasture's twice as green as mine, his buildings all look clean and fine, his wife has time, to run to town, while mine has always got a frown; I've got him beat on just one . thing, 1 have more to rest, by jing. I can't see neighbour's argument that he must pile up every cent he can, while he is strong and spry, for fear that he'll grow old and die without the wealth to guarantee a soft life for his family, Already he is rich, I'm sure while I am deep in debit and poor; but I am certain certain that my way of having fun 'most ev'ry day by heading for the swimming hole or trying out my fishing pole will give me ten years anyway beyond the time he'd laid away.
