In this regard, I have written to Education Minister Bette Stephenson asking that the long awaited Roman Catholic school in the Village of Newcastle be considered considered as a worthwhile project project to be undertaken through , this program. Other job creation measures include continued participation in the COED program, our joint initiative with the federal government • which is expected to yield a further 19,000 jobs. Enrichment Enrichment of provincial manpower training measures Will account account for some 9000 new jobs and training positions. Special emphasis is being placed on youth employment programs with $36 million being added to their budget for a total of $121 million and the creation of 100,000 jobs for Ontario's young people people this year. f Increased consumer spending spending and demand have a direct effect on the job market and help speed economic recovery. To encourage encourage consumers to purchase purchase large household items the 7 per cent retail sales tax on new appliances and furniture furniture will be lifted for a 90 day period. Similarly, to encourage investment investment in production, the exemption of retail sales tax on machinery and equipment used for manufacturing will be extended to include more types of machinery, heavy trucks and trailers, and tools and parts used for their repair. I am hoping this measure will help the suppliers suppliers to the auto industry. Tq help pay for the budget measures I have described and' to maintain the high quality of public services we enjoy here in Ontario, certain tax measures have been necessary. Effective May 24th, the # retail sales' tax on beverage alcohol will go up from 10 per cent to 1^ per cent at L.C'.B.O. and brewers retail stores, adding about 20 cents to a bottle of spirits and 15 cents to a case of 12 bottles of beer. The 7 per cent retail sales tax .that already, applies tp beverage aldohol will now be extended to tobacco. Also, the tobaeco tax will be increased increased by five percentage points, increasing the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes by 15 cents. Beginning July 1, 1983 and continuing through the 1984 tax year, a temporary 5 per cent surcharge on personal income thx will be collected from those with a taxable in- * come above $2178. This Social Services Maintenance Tax, as it is called, is necessary to assist in financing financing our public program and new measures to create jobs. OHIP premiums will go up 5 per cent this year with the result that effective June 1, 1983, singles will pay an extra $1.35 per month and families an extra $2.70. H While I believe the budget will do much to assist economic recovery, 1 am disappointed it did not con- In 12 Feet of Water Three men had to swim to shore out of Lake Ontario Ontario at Bowmanville Beach last week when their car left the road and was driven some thirty feet into Lake Ontario into into a depth of water of twelve feet. Hampton Plan Now Shelved The Central Lake Ontario Ontario Conservation Authority has shelved a proposal to re-develop the Hampton Conservation Area. The old mill has been called an eye sore, a tax burden and a fire hazard. This might be resolved resolved because of the commitment commitment in the budget to provide $116 million in new capital to expand technological training facilities in Sault Ste Marie, Guelph and Oshawa. I suspect the Oshawa reference means Durham College and 1 have spoken and followed up with a letter to the Minister of Education for further clarification. Statement 'Garbage' Bob Wilsher, Ward 3 School Trustee, has taken exception to Ontario Treasurer, Frank Miller's statement in that if school boards are pressed hard enough they will be forced to be more responsible. Wilsher said he was quite angry when he read the statement and added that Miller's statements were garbage. Miller also has been reported to have said that school boards lead the pack for getting into trouble trouble for spending money.
