The harvesting of forage crops is, just getting underway, underway, about 10 days behind normal. Yields are expected to be slightly below average. Spring grains are making better better growth after a slow start. Several acres i; -nded for spring grain wen shifted to other crops or, will not be seeded. The planting season for corn has stretched from I he 1st of May to June 10th. Many laMinjrs have planted pro on stage. Also included in the photo Tina Bryant and Shannon 2300 or 2400 early maturing corn hybrids. The yield potential for these hybrids is 25 -• 30 percent lower than that of the normal 2800 to 2900 heat unit varieties. We do not recommend that any corn be seeded after June 10th. The canning crops have also been delayed with the planting of peas extended to June 12th, kidney beans to June 15th, sweet corn to June 20th. Soybeans are being planted at time of writing this column, but we would not encourage planting later than June 15th. Most agricultural products will not be seriously affected in the marketplace because of competitive crops from the United States and other parts of Canada. Cool weather has affected agr. crops Ganaraska will continue conservation area work The Watershed committee of the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority had proposed that the authority turn over maint ainance of conservation areas to those municipalities in which the' areas were located. The proposal proposal was defeated at a general meeting of the authority'last week with the result the Ganaraska will continue continue to maintain such areas. The program of cutting grass and maintaining the conservation areas has cost the Authority some $20,000 annually in the past and as pointed out by Diane Hamre, Town of Newcastle representative representative this money could amount upwards of $40,000 if used for conservation pur poses. ■ Strong opposition to the proposed move came from Go bourg , where the Ganaraska maintains a sizeable park in the east end of the Town east of the County offices. The proposal would have also affected a park in the Town of Port Hope and others such as the Thorne's Park Conservation area in the Town of Newcastle where the authority maintains a park lot. The Authority, is however, to continue monitoring the cost of maintaining the conservation conservation areas and if costs rise too great further consideration consideration could be given to the turn-over policy.
