Congratulations From Around the Region Cut 43 from job force Mathews Conveyor Ltd. of Port Hope has cut 43 employees from their workforce and intend that a further 12 will be placed on indefinite layoff near the end of the month. The layoff is due to a completion completion of a large inhouse contract that has now been completed. Extra hiring was undertaken earlier this year for the inhouse contract and Mathews is now operating at a normal level of employe- ment. Federal Government objects , The Federal Government, has registered objection to Cobourg council in that the Town has Set a flat fee of $350.00 for boaters docking in Cobourg annually rather than a per foot charge. The issue has been a contentious one in Cdbourg with large • boat owners seeking the flat raie charge and who finally won put in their demands. The Federal Government recently located $1 million for works at Cobourg Harbour Harbour and feel, the flat rate charge does discriminate between between the larger and smaller boaters. Although there was some support on council for a $14.50 per foot charge.it was not enough to change the charge from the $350 flat rate charge for 1983. Tender for chronic care unit ■ The Dr. Joseph O. Ruddy General Hospital in Whitby has been given approval to call tenders for a new 32-bed chronic care unit. It is expected expected that the new unit will be in operation in the spring of 1984. The plans call for conversion conversion of a second floor ward into continuing care unit for chronic patients, and will include include facilities for physiotherapy, occupational therapy and recreation and an outdoor terrace. Represent PC's in London Allan Lawrence, M.P. Durham-Northumberland and Erik Neilson, leader of the opposition in the House of Commons are representing the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada at the European European Democratic Union Leaders' conference being held in London, England. Lawrence has represented the PC's of Canada on thé EUDC in the past. , The U.S., Germany, England, Austria, Norway, Sweden and other European Countries will be represented at the conference. 1 Lawrence, on a television interview, said he would hope that Mulroney, recently elected leader of the PC's of Canada would take the party slightly further to the right, "but not too far to the right". UF 6 costs rise Construction costs of the new UF6 refinery to be built by Eldorado Resources Ltd. in Port Hope have risen. A new revised building permit permit issued by the Town of Port Hope placed the cost at $13.5 million compared with a previous estimate of $10 million. More extended care beds The Region of Durham council has given its approval 1 for conversion of residential beds in two of its homês for the aged to extended care beds. The proposal will fill a need for extended care beds and at the same time save the region some $14,000 per year in operating costs due to the fact that the province provides provides higher. grants' for'extended for'extended care beds, * The proposal -includes the conversion of ten beds at Hillsdale Manor and ten beds, at' Fairview lîodge. It has been found that senjors, due to community services, are now staying in their own homes longer and ' when they do come to homes for the aged they do require more extended care facilities. Completes successful successful year The Whitby-Oshawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has completed its first year of operation being productive and successful. The organization helps those who are interested, in tracing their Family Tree! For this purpose, regular monthly meetings are held. The next meeting is slated for Tuesday, July 5th, 7 to 10 p.m. in the auditorium ' of the Whitby Library at 405 Dundas Street. Meetings are free and Open to the public. Recent news reports have mentioned that an indirect attack attack on his leadership has been launched by Alberta" NDP leader, Grant Notley, , and former Saskatchewan leader, Allan Blakeney. ' * Housing starts for the first five months in -1983 has been set at 1400 compared with 442 during the sam'e period in 1982, Construction "of single family homes "have led the way. ; 7-Eleven's stay open 7-Eleven convenience stores, in the City of Oshawa continue to stay open 24-hours a day in contravention contravention of a city by-law that calls for the closing of such stores from midnight to 5 a.m. To this point charges have not been laid. Mac stores in the city have been adhering to the by-law. Oshawa is facing the enforcement enforcement of City by-laws relating not only to convenience convenience stores but also gas sta^ lions and strip premises, thé latter which have been expanding expanding in the city over the past month. $38 million plan turned down A planned development for Hamilton Township valued at $38 million which was to include a 30-room hotel with pool, tennis courts, squash courts, golf course, heliport, and clusters of some 212 condominium homes, has been turned down by the Ministry of Municipal • Affairs and Housing as being premature. The decision of the ministry has Hamilton Township council in an uproar condemning the provincial provincial body of interferring in municipal plans. ; t In determining the plàn premature the ministry points out that the Township does not have an official play. The township for the past two years have worked on such a plan endeavouring to develop the plan with information from thg municipality and with work being undertaken by the province. Recently thé •Township gave up bn the scheme and have now hired a consultant. The municipality has been unable to provide the pertinent information for such a plan to this point, states the Ministry.
