Marie Among the Hurons a few miles from the Georgian'Bay town of Midland. It's a reconstruction of Ontario's first European settlement that French colonists, Hurons an* Jesuits established in the wilderness in 1639. There are 22 buildings in the community; and the young people portraying labourers, priests and craftsmen craftsmen make it all seem very authentic. ' And Ste. Marie is authentic. Archaeologists studied the site for years and then went to work. The job was completed in 1968 and historians, tourists and schoolchildren began to pour in to experience life in a different century. Last week I visited a few of the artists and artisans behind the scenes gt Ste. Marie. People who live in the surrounding area. In nearby Victoria Harbour, I watched Raymond DesChenes creating authentic candlesticks of Rep- naisance design for the Ste. Marie Chapel. Ray has been a restorer of fine art and wood for more than three decades and has been a valuable asset to Ste. Marie for eleven years. A scholar as well as an artist, he has a library of 3,000 books for reference. A few miles away at a little shop called "Grass Roots'* in the village of Wyebridgè, Trish Hines weaves many of the costumes for the "Jesuits" who roam the site. When I dropped in, she was weaving another of the "black robes." Ten yards of material are needed for each cassock, stretching 60 inch, es i n width when woven on the loom. Trish estimates it takes about 60 hours to weave the material for a robe, and she limits herself to four hours a day "or else I would be seeing a chiropractor every day." In a workshop close to the Ste. Marie palisades, carpenter Elmer LeClair of Midland was working on the base of a beautiful tabernacle when I called to say hello. Elmer is an expert in the wood-making skills of three centuries ago. I've been going to Ste. Marie since the first archaeologists archaeologists were sifting through the rubble about 20 years ago. But it wasn't until last week that I saw some of the artists and artisans from the surrounding area at work. Through their skills more than rôvo million visitors have experienced a link with the 17th century. , A link with our heritage. '■> ORONO FUEL & LUMBER Station Street and Hwy. 115, Oropo, Ont.
