But since the 1950's most residents of Southern Ontario have had to satisfy their appetite, for grand spectacle spectacle in other ways. Now, an unusual conservation conservation effort may restore populations of this great bird to the Southwestern Ontario shores of Lake Erie. On June 20th, the Long Point National National Wildlife area, a vast, wild complex of sand spit habitats arching out into the lake, became the site of an eagle rehabilitation effort unique in Canada. Four six- week old eaglets have been, successfully relocated from nests'on Lake of the Woods* in Northwestern Ontario, to artificial■„ nests known as "hacking boxes" on top of a sand dune overlooking the ponds and trees of Long Point. The decline of the Bald 1 Eagle, which has few natural enemies after learning to fly, is due to human interference with its nesting areas, hunting, hunting, and most important of all, DDT and other pesticide contaminations. With' many synthetic chemicals sëll on the loose, including pCR's there is no guarantee that this experiment will be an unqualified unqualified success. However, scientists with, the Canadian Wildlife Service point out that five young were hatched in the region during*1983, the largest number in years. Then too, Long Ppint provides relative isolation and abun dant food supplies. Along with the constant vigil being kept by students this summer these conditions will help ensure ensure the birds emerge on wing by this fall. Still, with à mortality rate of. 90% before the normal breeding age of five years, and only six known active nests on Lake Erie's Canadian Canadian shores, it will be some time before we know if it's possible to make amends for decimating bald eagle populations to the point it is considered an endangered species. The project is cosponsored cosponsored by the Canadian Wildlife Service and the Ontario Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and is primarily funded by the Elsa Wild Animal Appeal of Canada. It follows on the heels of a similar effort in New York State which has produced breeding age eagles. 372 Students at Summer School 372 students from the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of education are attending summer school this year in the continuing education program. Miles, Farm Business Advisor, Toronto TAX MANAGEMENT: Farmers may elect to report the income from farming farming on the cash basis for tax purposes; other business with the exception of fishing must report their income on the accrual accrual basis. With the accrual method, the taxpayer records income in the ' year earned, regardless of when payment is received and expenses are deducted in the year incurred, incurred, whether paid or not. The cash method requires the reporting of income in the year received and the deduction deduction of expenses in the year paid. Filing tax on the cash basis makes sense to the farm taxpayer taxpayer as the newborn calf is reported as income two years hence after considerable feed and labour have made it a more valuable animal or the wheat or corn crop has occurred. occurred. .Unfortunately, the cash method of preparation of income income tax could leave the farm manager with less than a full understanding of What the farm actually did or did not produce for the year. It did not record the value of the extra cows and sows on hand or the increase or decrease in the accounts not paid or not received. It is permissible to convert an accrual statement to a cash statement for tax purposes. Management of the farm is very important in the 1980"s. Why not manage the farm totally? Complete farm records on the accrual basis that includes inventory change and change in accounts accounts payable and receivable. File the tax from these records on the cash basis. Consult with the farm management specialist and accountant of your choice if in doubt. Six months of the year have already passed. If one uses the calendar year as the business year, there are six months left to take action. SHOULDER INJURIES A second type of sports' injury commonly associated with racquet sports is the painful shoulder. Initially, there is a dull and bothersome ache in the shoulder. However, with continued use, the person soon finds it difficult to raise the affected arm above the head Without considerable considerable pain. This may progress to disabling shoulder pain. jShoulder pain is one problem problem that is aggravated by aging. The tendon in the area of the shoulder does not have the same elasticity elasticity as we get older and is prone to small tears when overused or strained. These problems of aging can be diminished somewhat by regular exercise. This has to be done as a slow, gradual ►introduction of exercise with good, periods of rest between. * Treatment for this injury is usually a long, involved process: Anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy are usually the first modes of treatment. If this fails, the shoulder may be • injected with local anaesthetic and a steroid 'drug.» The local anaesthetic gives a temporary relief and tells the physician he has injected the correct site. Following this the shoulder often gets sorer for a few days, then settles. Gradually, physical strengthening strengthening of the shoulder is , encouraged with a supervised supervised physiotherapy program program and racquet sports are discouraged until the healing healing process is complete.
