Port Hope almanac project Three full-time employees working under a Canada Community Development grant are producing what may be called an almanac of Port Hope. The schedule is being produced by the Port Hope Branch of the Architectural Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. Ontario. Area streams prove best for Rainbows : Ten of the fifteen top rainbow rainbow trout in a recent competition competition held by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters came from four area trout' streams, Bowmanville, Wilmot, Ganaraska and Shelter Valley in the Grafton area. The largest rainbow caught in Ontario and in the contest was an 18 pound, ten ounce rainbow caught in the Shelter Valley stream by Bill Reis of- Belleville. In second place an 18 pound, four ounce rainbow, 34 inches long, was caught in the Ganaraska by a Rexdale man. The rainbow from the * Wilmot came in third place being 18-pounds, 4 four ounces and 33 'inches in length caught by Tim Ar- chameault of Pembroke. In the first fifteen winners, five were with fish from the Ganaraska, two from the Wilmot, two from the jBowmanville Creek and one from Shelter Valley creek. Want Union workers on College expansion Construction unions want union labour hired for the $4.7 million expansion project project slated for Durham College College which should be completed completed by the opening of College College in September of 1984. Union members picketed the college some three years ago when, a Cobourg firm was using non-union labour on the site. The unions have met with Mel Garland, College president, president, over the issue. Tenders are expected to be received in October for the project. Women's Resource Centre in Cobqurg A Women's Resource Centre Centre recently opened in Cobourg with three student employees. The centre is sponsored by the County-wide Women In Crisis group, providing information information on issues concerning women, including rape, divorce, child custody, family court, family planning and welfare. The students are also preparing a legal handbook for women. Eberlee elected national director Altamae Eberlee who has served on the directorate of the Whitby-Oshawa- Newcastle United Way for 12 years and is immediate past president was elected recently to the National Board of directors for two years. The election was. held in Winnipeg at the National Biennial Leadership Conference- Conference- of the United Way- Centraide Canada. Creates 190 jobs in Durham Region • More than 190 jobs, of a ■short-term nature, have been created in area municipalities in Durham through a number of federal-provincial programs programs designed for those whose unemployment insurance insurance has run out. The federal and provincial '•nupmmfhts' contributed $100 million each for the program program which funds have now all been used up. Across Canada more than 24,200 jobs have been created. The Town of Newcastle has participated in the program program and three workers have been busy painting and repairing municipal facilities from community centres to arenas. To reconsider GM changeover GM Canada has been asked asked to reconsider the massive conversion of their B-body plant in Oshawa to an A-body assembly system. The conversion is underway underway but still GM U.S. has asked for reconsideration. A decision is expected this week on the matter. More individuals declare bankruptcy Although business bankruptcies were on the decline for the first five months months of 1983 compared to 1982 the case is not the same for personal bankruptcies in the Whifby-Oshawa area. Personal bankruptcies .increased .increased to 117 for the first five months of 1983 compared compared to 79 in the same period in 1982- Business bankruptcies declined to 17 in the five month period in 1983 compared compared to 22 in 1982. Only occasional yard sales Eleven homeowners in Oshawa will be sent letters from the City advising that they are holding too frequent yard sales. Task force to report on possible school closing The finance and property committee of the ■ Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education has suggested suggested that a Task Force be setup of parents, principals and two school trustees to prepare a report as to the possible closing of the Dr. Hawkins Pub.lic School in Port Hope. It has been suggested that the school be closed and students housed in vacant classrooms in the Port Hope High School. The Task Force is to report by December 1st, 1983. The Port Hope High School has a capacity for 1640 students but has a projected projected enrolment for Sepember 1983 of 891. Eleven classrooms will be dosed this coming school term. Weekday tours at McLaughlin gallery Daily tours of the exhibition, exhibition, Kurelek's Vision of Canada will be available to gallery visitors for the duration duration of the exhibition in OshaWa.
