: 1 heading Up Co-op Conference Mrs. Eva Mrs. Eva Nichols, head of the Co-operative Education, program out of Clarke High School and director-editor of the Ontario Co-operative-** Education Association looks forward to 1984. Nichols has been appointed chairman for the OCHA conference to be held in 1984 at Trent University University in Peterborough. The conference is being held June 3, 4 and 5 and Bette Stephenson, ■'Minister of Education, has agreed to be the key-note speaker for the conference. Mrs. Nichols states plans The holidays are over and with the exception of a few days at a cottage and the completion of some small jobs around the house and office with a paint brush nothing really exciting has happened other than attendance attendance to the theatre on two occasions. It seems when the Arnold Wallaces return from the south our interest in theatre increases and we did take the opportunity to attend "Chorus Line" at the O'Keefe Centre and as well spent an evening at thç Marigold Dinner Playhouse to see "On Golden Pond". ■ Certainly we enjoyed both . productions first with Chorus Line being a musical-dance • feature along with a somewhat interesting story. It was the second time we had seen the show which likely indicates indicates our enjoyment. ■ "On Golden Pond" at the Marigold in Whitby was a real joy. Murray Westgate does a terrific job as the crusty, crusty, aging, retired professor spending the summer at his summer cottage. The play provided many laughs and we ■ thought Westgate excelled in his role making the most of every punch line in the script. We were taken back to our youth however over the holidays in an endeavour to have one of the three "Welcome to Orono" signs replaced at the north end of Mill Street. It was a number of years ago that the Orono Chamber of Commerce installed the th igns at the entrances intïrihe Village. Since that time the one on Mill Street Nichols are now underway for the conference being arranged by a committee of eight from an area from Oshawa to Peter borough and Gananoque. She states meetings will be held.on a monthly basis until the conference with the meetings being held at the Clarke High School. The plans . include some thirty-five workshops and it is expected that from 250 to 300 teachers! will be in attendance- attendance- mainly from Ontario but with some from other parts of Canada and the United States- was damaged and returned to the old Hydro building for répairs. There it has sat for a couple of years to be remove outside with the current cleanup, paint-up for the Orono Showcase Cooperative. Cooperative. Since it has been repaired it occurred that why not put the sign back up in its original location which required a simple couple of holes and the'transportation of the 4x8 to its roadside location. On making my first enquiry enquiry for the work to be done it was said, "Yes we can have it done .and we will bring in a post-hole digger on the flat bed trailer. The second enquiry enquiry resulted in the question being asked, "Where could I get a post hole digger?" Now this only requires two post holes about five feet deep and I had thought surely with a shovel this would take no more time than ten to fifteen fifteen minutes. Possibly I'm outdated but it did remind me of a time when my father had gotten me a job when I was a kid ■digging postholes. Tom Cowan who lived in the big white house across |rom the arena oh Park Street also owned farm land on the west side of what has now become known as O'Chon- ski's Road. You would drive onto the land if you could continue past O'Chonski Road on the old railroad tracks. I recall the site was somewhat stoney and on the second day of digging I suggested suggested to my employer that if he would hire another kid we would get the job completed completed twice as fast. "Boy, that would not be the case, the two of you would spend an amount of time talking when you should be shovelling and it would cost me more to have the same number of holes dug." He further pointed out, that another employee would greatly reduce my take of the payout at the end of ithe project. project. . It is funny how certain happenings remain with you for years and this is one I often enjoy when reminiscing of those days gone by.
