4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 17, 1983 ( sT^rTs ) Orono Bantam Soccer team reaches Oshawa finals On July 22 and 23, the Orono Bantam soccer team participated in the Swiss Chalet-Harvey's Summer Soccer Tournament which took place at the Civic Center Soccer field in Oshawa. Our first game of the tournament tournament was Friday night against Brookside Park in which Orono came away with a 4-3 victory in a shoot out; The first half of the game saw a lot of good end-to-end action action but no scoring due to the fine' efforts of both goal tenders. We played about 15 minutes into the second half when the game was stopped due to a curfew time at the field, so with there being no score we entered in a shoot put. Shooting for Orono was Jeff Vanhaverbeke, Alan Hall, Paul Henry, Greg and Keith Vey with the latter four players each scoring, a goal. By winning this game we moved on to play in the championship game on Saturday night. Kingside Park was the team we met in the championship championship game with the result being Orono was defeated 4-0. We played a hard defensive defensive game but just couldn't get the opportunities for scoring. scoring. At the end of the second half both teams lined up on the field and were presented with medallions, Kingside getting the gold and Orono receiving the silver. Kendal Eagles eliminate Peterborough in playdowns The Kendal Eagles on Sunday Sunday in Kendal defea ted .Peterborough .Peterborough by a score of 6-4 in the first game of the final "C" series in the Eastern Ontario Ontario Baseball playdowns. Peterborough last week eliminated Ajax which now pits them against Kendal for the league championship in the "C" series. The winner of the Kendal-Peterborough series continue in the Ontario playdowns. The Eagles t<5ok an early 1- 0 lead in Sunday's game and then edged their score to 2- 0. By the end of the fifth Peterborough had gone out in front with some good hitting hitting off the Kendal pitcher and some fielding errors. In the eighth frame Kendal scored four runs to then go ahead 6-4 and to hold that position with three straight outs against Peterborough in the ton of the ninth. Kendal had 6 runs off 11 hits while Peterborough scored, four runs off twelve hits. ' The . Eagles on Tuesday night travelled to Peterborough Peterborough where again the Kendal squad defeated their opposition by a score of 5-1. John Stacey was the winning pitcher. This victory allows the Eagles to further adnace in the plsydown series but at the present time it is not known just where this will be or when.
