'uts ribbon for official opening Funds directed to The. Orono Arena Improvement Improvement and Project Fund Committee last Wednesday served almost five hundred people within a two hour , period at their annual beef barbeque held in the Orono Park. •' A number of draws were held during the course of the evening with Mrs. Davidson winning a lawn chair donated by the committee; Mr. Lionel Tennant a lawn chair donated by Rolph Hardware and Betty Betty Chatterton took home a lovely plant donated by Jensen Nurseries. Music for the evening was provided by Mr. Ron white. The committee would like to express their thanks to all that participated at the Beef Barbecue and to especially thank those who volunteered their time to prepare and serve the food whose help is necessary to handle such a large crowd. The committee will apply funds derived from this project project to the new paving that has been installed at the Arena parking lot. Mrs. Gladys' Moffat of Orono does the honours in cutting the ribbon at the official official opening, of the new Recreation Building at the Durham County Senior Citizen's Lodge on Monday evening. Her late husband, Bob Moffat, was a'driving force in the former Durham County Co-operative Medical Services which was the forerunner to the Durham County Senior Citizen's Lodge organization. Mrs. Moffat is assisted by Counc. Marie Hubbard of the Town of Newcastle, Rae Stewart, president of the Senior Citizen's Lodge organization and M.P. Allan Lawrence. Published Every Wednesday Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 24, 1983 Recreation Centre Officially Open Mrs. Gladys Moffat of Orono cut the ribbon to officially officially open the new Recreation Recreation Building at the Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge, Station Street, Orono, on Monday evening. The building completed earlier this year at a cost of alihost $100,000 accommodâtes* accommodâtes* up to 110 in the main auditorium and has facilities of a kitchen, laun dry and a basement recreation recreation area for floor shuffle board, hand shuffle board, a pool tafcle, and darts. It enhances ■ the southwest cor ner of the Senior Citizen's complex and is of brick veneer construction. Rae Stewart, president of the Lodge committee, acted as master of ceremonies for the official opening and pointed out to the sizeable HOCKEY REGISTRATION OPENS FRIDAY The Orono Amateur Athletic Association are holding their hockey registrations this Friday, August 26th and Tuesday, August 30th at the Orono Arena. Registrations will be accepted from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on both dates. The Association is opening the arena early this year and offering a number of sessions for each age group in power skating. This feature is included in the registration fee being charged whether it is used or not. Assist with the winter program by registering early early this year. FINE WEATHER OUTLASTS TOWN MONEY The fine weather of this summer continues with this week being no exception as to hot, humid conditions conditions of the past weeks. He said the Lodge organization has been a terrific institution and has had an effect on the surrounding surrounding community. He said the Senior Citizen's Lodge organization has set an example example for at least five such projects in thç district, either now completed or in the process process of being completed. "1 think this is just wonderful", he said. Counc. Marie Hubbard brought best wishes from the Town of Newcastle stating that the effort at this complex is an example for all other communities. "God Bless you", she said. Sam Cureatz, ' East Durham M.P.P.,' said it was a pleasure to receive an invitation invitation to the opening and it was a joy to his heart to see such a fine building. "You have set a fine example", he said. Mr. Cureatz presented the Lodge with a flag and a picture picture of the Queen to hang in the new hall. Following the ribbon cutting cutting ceremonies the gathering retired to the banquet hall in the recreation building for a WORK COMPLETED FOR CO-OPERATIVE Workmen have completed their work at the former Orono Armouries building in the north section of. the building. Both the back rooms, upstairs and downstairs have been repainted and floors sanded and refinished. Archways have also been installed in that now the three bottom room are joined by the archways. Further the crew have repainted the open section just 'south of the rooms at the north and in all the building Has taken on a most improved appearance. The Orono Showcase Co-operative are to open threir co-operative in the building sometime at the end of September. The group has some 22 members who will be exhibiting for sale their crafts, knitted goods, paintings paintings and antiques. It should be an outstanding showing for Orono and another commercial enterprise in the downtowri 1 area of the Village. ORONO. FISH AND HUNT COOK-OUT . The Orono Fish and Hiftit Club held a wild- game cook-out at their shooting range Saturday evening for members and their families. Some seventy were pre- '! sent for.the outing when bear, beaver and venison roasts cooked, on the barbecue were the menu for the evening along,' of course, with other complimentary dishes. An enjtiybale evening for the active membership of the Orono "Fish and Hunt Club. Close to 50Ü in attendance Last Wednesday evening the annual' beef barbpcue held at the Orono Park again attracted a large crowd (although down slightly from fast year) who enjoyed fine food and as well the friendly companionship of fellow villagers and visitors. Above Gord Atkins, Earl Taylor ând Russ Major serve delicious barbecued beef to but one customer of the many in, attendance. Revenue from the event Will be used by' the Orono ' Arena Improvement and Project Project Fund for further improvements improvements at the local arena. .
