Putting the tournament into the international international category was a team from Greece, New York. Other teams taking part in the tournament were from - Peterborough, 2 teams; Cobourg; Oshawa; Orono; Trenton and Kingston. The scoring system for the round robin section of the tournament was - 2 points for a win and 1 point to each team in case of a tie. The team with the most points in each division play off for the championship. At 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning we were on "the field playing against the Greece Select entry for New York. Orono went down to defeat by a score of 1-0. The teams were evenly matched, therefore, there was plenty of end-t®-end action with lots of good saves coming from both goaltenders. When the teams lined up to shake hands at the end of the game .the Orono players were each presented with a Greece Select crest. In out second game of the day we came up against the Cobourg team. It was à real hard game which ended in a 1-1 tie. Due to the hard work of the defense and the midfielders midfielders most of the game was played in the tobourg end but we just couldn't get the, ball past the goaltender. Doing Doing J he scoring for Orono was Mike Gormley. We played our 3rd game of the tournament on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. with Trenton being being the opposition. Orono's hard work really paid off as we came away, with a 4-0 victory. victory. We dominated the play in both the first and second half of the game which was due to the extra effort that odr whole team put forth. Scoring for the Orono team was ■ Paul Shaw and Jeff Vanhaverbeke each getting one while Ken Bailey put in two. Aueust 31. 1983 ( SPORTS } Orono Bantams advance to finals, play in Orono Sunday The Orono Bantam Baseball team have now advanced advanced to the Ontario finals and are but two wins away from holding the Ontario Championship for the Bantam Bantam E Division. After defeating Beeton in two Straight games the Orono team now face Cottam(the Windsor area) with the first, game to be played in Cottam. this Saturday and the next game to be played at the Orono Park on Sunday afternoon afternoon with starting time 1:00 p.m. A double header will be played in Orono on Sunday if necessary. The series is the best two out of three games. The Orono Bantams who have been playing with teams, during the regular schedule, far above their category found little difficulty difficulty in taking the Beeton- Ordno series. On Friday night the open ing game of the series was held in the Orono Park with the Orono Bantams taking a 21 to 8 victory. The second game, played in Beeton on Sunday, was a 29 to 9 victory for the local boys. Randy Reid and Scott McCullough McCullough shared the pitching duties for the Orono Club in the Beeton series. Jim Wood was the top hitter of the series registering five hits in his seven trips to the plate. Orono Novice No. 1 Bronze winners The Orono No. 1 Novice Girl's team ended the season play as the winner of the bronze in their league. The Novice No. 1 team played their final games in the playdowns on Saturday at; the Tyrone diamond losing both games, one to Newcastle and one to Brownsdale. Kirby girl wins gold at Los Angeles meet Jack! Van Doleweerd, 14, of Kirby, and daughter of Lyn and Bill Van Doleweerd, was the winner of a gold medal August 13th at the Jesse Owens Games held in Los Angeles. The games are sponsored by the Atlantic Richfield Corporation. Jacki captured the gold medal in the high jump competition competition in her age group with a jump of five feet three inches. inches. She has a personal best of five feet five inches. Jacki was competing as a member of the City -of Buffalo Buffalo team and she earned a berth on that team after win ning earlier competitions including including one at Niagara Falls. Jacki adds that there were about 20 Canadians on this team. After winning a gold medal in Buffalo, she was off to the Los Angeles Coloseum where she took part- in the high jump competition August 13th. Her performance helped to give the Buffalo team a second second place finish overall. Jacki Van Doleweerd is a , member of the Oshawa Legion Track Club and will .be entering Clarke High School this, fall.
