I guess a lot of us did in those days. Recently, my boyhood dreams came true. And far beyond my wildest expectations. I was Honorary Fire * Chief for a day in the Southwestern'Ontario town of Simcoe. « The occasion was the town's annual Friendship Festival. Part of the celebration was "Muster '83," the Simcoe Firefighter's antique apparatus show. It was an international event with old pumpers from New York, Michigan and Pennsylvania on display, along with trucks from various parts ôf Ontario. There was a big parade to open the whole thing. I was in the Fire Chief's car wearing a chief's cap with gold braid. I didn't drive the car. Dave Harriot, : the Deputy Deputy Chief, did that, leaving me free to wave to the applauding applauding crowds. 1 What I didn't know was that the applause was for the beautiful 19 year-old Festival Queen who was riding right behind us on a decorated float. I finally caught on, but .kept waving anyway. Just in case. But later on, I had my moment of glory. The mayor presented me with a big white chief's hat, and an impressive impressive plaque cornmemmorating the event. There were about '200 firefighters and their wives and children attending the festival. After the parade, the judging of the antique equiprpeht got underway. The old pumpers had been carefully restored by the ' various brigades. There was an old horse-drawn vehicle vehicle from 1317. And Simcoe's own 1936 Bickle won another award. That vehicle has won about 20 awards at shows in both Canada and the United States. After that there were demonstrations of speed and skill in firefighting. Simcoe's traditional rival is the volunteer brigade from Gasport, a little town in Michigan, won some events, but lost in the water barrel barrel competition. Then the wives took over. Wearing their husband's outfits, they put on a dazzling display of skill. But the real stars were the children. In their outsized equipment they stole the show as they handled the . heavy hose with surprising finesse. To top it off, the Simcoe kids beat Gasport! ! stood there in mv big white Fire Chief's hat, eating a hot dog. !t ; -was à day to : remember, i Schedule in 1st round Ladles Lobb- Ball playoffs Wed., Sept 7 - Anonymous at Kings - Memorial Park South at 6:00 p.m. Kendal at Tom's - Newcastle Park at 6:00 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 8 - Venezia at C & C - Orono Park at 8:30 p.m. Tyrone at My Apothecary -Newcastle Park at 6:00 p.m. Mon., Sept, 12 - My Apothecary at Tyrone (if necessary) - Tyrone Park at 6:00 p.m. Northcutt at Village -Newcastle Park at 6:00 p.m.; Memorial at Independents -Memorial Park South at 6:00 p.m. Tues., Sept. 13 - Kings at Anonymous - Lord Elgin School at 6:00 p.m.; Toms at Kendal - Kendal Park at 6:00 p.m. Wed., Sept. 14 - C & C at 'Venezia (if necessary) -Orono Park at 6:00 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 15 Anonymous at Kings (if necessary) - Orono Park at 8:30 p.m. Kendal ■ at Tom's (if necessary) - Newcastle Park at 6:00 p.m. SECURE A LOAN \ mortgage uses real estate lo secure a loan whereas a chattel mortgage uses movable goods'as security.
